My heartfelt condolences to Dan, Melanie and families, on the loss of their mother and grandmother. With my husband Jim we spent many great visits with Susan at the Hockey Luncheons. We also enjoyed the dinners Susan loved to have at her home, where she was always such a gracious hostess. She always made sure to have her home made "lemon bars" ready for Jim when she came to visit with us. She was a dear friend who left us with wonderful memories to treasure. She will be sadly missed but never forgotten. My kindest regards to all of you at this very difficult time.

The whole family was absolutely heartbroken when hearing of Susan’s passing although we knew she was gravely ill. She was a wonderful person and so kind to us when we arrived for our one year stay in Canada in 2009. As our neighbor, she took great care of us and really made us feel welcome to our new home. She was a great support throughout our stay and was like an extra grandmother to the children. We kept in contact after returning to Sweden and Susan’s letters were always very wise and helpful in times of trouble. She also came to visit us in 2011, which we appreciated vey much and I think that she did too. We will never forget her and always cherish the lovely memories that we have.
We would also like to send our condolences to Melanie and Dan and their families. Thank you for keeping in contact. We will truly be there in spirit on the day of the memorial.

I was married to Susan for more than ten years. Our first home was in a rental on the main street of Oshawa Ontario. We eventually settled on Arlington Avenue. Sue worked tirelessly raising a family and helping to put me through university part time, while I taught school. She herself had graduated from McGill University in Montreal. Her favourite Prof. was Hugh MacLennan, the author of the book, “Two Solitudes”. It is the story of the English and French cultures co-existing in Quebec. He influenced her greatly and she fell in love with French and learned to speak it fluently.
Susan was also a most caring and affectionate mother to our two children, Melanie and Daniel. When Sue fell ill it was Melanie who took her into her home and cared for her lovingly. It was a reversal of roles in many ways and Dan was there too to lend support however he could.
Susan was my tour guide as we traveled to Jamaica and through France, Italy Austria, and Germany which opened my eyes to the beauty and wonder of those far away lands.
Years later, after separating, we maintained a close and enduring friendship.
She was a woman who fought with her pen and voice for issues in which she believed. Truth, fairness, and justice.
She had special love for her partner Carl and explained it as, “something which transcended both time and space”. In a way it was also a union of two solitudes.
I will always remember her as an intelligent, understanding, talented, generous and considerate woman and dear friend.

There are no words that can describe how truly heartbroken I am - I feel Susan's loss to the core of my soul. Susan was such an incredible inspiration in my life and meant so much to me, probably more than she ever knew. As a young woman who grew up without a mother, Susan was the first woman that I truly bonded with and the role that she played in my life was incredibly impactful. Her influence and guidance in my life truly helped shape the person that I am today. My love of travel started with Susan, as she took me on my first out of country trip to Jamaica which ignited a love of travel. Her love of cooking and food opened my eyes to incredible cuisines. Her fierceness to always fight for what is right was a big influence on my passion for social justice which has shaped my professional career. I am filled with sadness that we fell out of touch in recent years but there wasn't a day that went by that she didn't cross my mind. My heart goes out to Dan and Melanie and your families, for your loss. Your mother was a truly wonderful person that meant so very much to me, I absolutely adored her and her loss will forever be felt.

Sending our condolences to your family as I know this is a hard time for you all. Susan was very good to me growing up with Dan as a great friend and remember a lot of great conversations and all the help she gave me when my grandfather passed away when I was traveling in France and trying to get home. Her and Carl got me to the airport and booked me on a flight home to my family. Much love to you and your family. Guy , Cassandra and Cliana Cooke
