It is with profound sadness that we announce John’s passing on January 4, 2023 in Toronto. Dearly loved and devoted husband of 69 years to Barbara. Proud and loving father of Nancy of Toronto, and David (Linda) of Southport Connecticut. Adoring Papa to his three granddaughters Morgan, Bailey, and Lauren, who filled his heart with joy.
John was born in Toronto on Feb 17, 1928, son of Dr. Arthur and Kathleen Hilliker, and was pre-deceased by his sister Margaret Aikins.
John was the President of his fraternity “Phi Delta Theta” and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1951. After University he joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, holding a succession of increasingly senior positions with postings in Montego Bay Jamaica, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Toronto culminating with his election as Vice Chairman and Director in 1980.
John left the CIBC in 1982 for a fresh challenge as the Chairman, President and C.E.O. of the Canada Permanent Trust Company. Following a merger with Canada Trust, he was elected Chairman.
In 1986 John was invited to lead Bimcor Inc., the pension fund investment arm of the B.C.E. group of companies. John felt privileged and enjoyed his successful career in ‘The Three Pillars’ – Banking, Trust & Investments.
Over the years John served as a Director on the Boards of Maple Leaf Mills Ltd., St. Lawrence Starch Co. Ltd., Sunnybrook Medical Centre Institute, Upper Lakes Shipping Company, Cairn Capital, The Sumitomo Bank of Canada, Tridel, Thornmark Asset Management, and The Salvation Army.
In semi-retirement John enjoyed golf, bridge, and a continuing involvement in several directorships. He was an Advisor to many, providing caring confidential help to others. He was a man of warmth, charm and humour and always maintained a strong moral character with ethical beliefs. Through his life John had a demanding career with many involvements, yet his priority was always his family.
Our thanks to the management and staff of The Teddington Retirement Residence who cared for John with kindness and compassion, to his PSW’s Allan and Mila who were attentive and warm hearted every day, and to the team at the Tammy Latner Centre who ensured that John had every consideration to the very end.
In keeping with John’s wishes a private family graveside service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. If desired, donations in John’s memory may be made with our gratitude to Glaucoma Research Society of Canada.
