Obituary of William Andrew Dimma
Member of the Order of Canada, Order of Ontario, B.A.Sc., P.Eng., M.B.A., D.B.A., D.Comm. (Hon.), L.L.D. (Hon.), F.I.C.D., ICD.D.
Born in Montreal, raised in Toronto. Survived by his wife Louise (Ash), daughters Katherine and Suzanne, and son-in-law, Arriz Hassam.
Bill sat on 57 corporate boards and 40 not-for-profit boards over more than 40 years.
His MBA is from York University, and his Doctorate is from Harvard University (Business School). He was Executive V.P. Union Carbide Canada, President of Torstar Corporation, President of Royal LePage, and Dean of the Schulich School of Business at York University. Bill wrote two well-received books on Corporate Governance.
He was an accomplished swimmer; a superb cross-country skier; played water polo and squash at the University of Toronto; and he garnered multiple Master points in Bridge. He also loved traveling with his wife, and with his family.
He was a great Dad, playful and fun-loving, and a wonderful role model for his two daughters, who admired and loved him deeply.
A marriage of 61 years speaks for itself. It was a complete partnership. One could not do without the other.
He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, December 22nd, with his beloved cat Pluto by his side.
Oh, and he could run a pool table like nobody’s business.
Cremation has taken place, and a private family interment will take place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in the spring. Special thanks to Dr. Graeme Schwindt for his compassionate support throughout.
