Obituary of Elizabeth (Liz) Mary Stewart

It is with broken hearts that our family announces the passing of Elizabeth (“Liz”) Mary Stewart (formerly Arthur) on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 72 years old. Liz passed away at Centenary Hospital with family by her side. Liz persevered after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease several years ago, and her grace and courage will forever be an inspiration to family and friends alike.

Liz is predeceased by 20 days by her husband Bob. She is survived by her adoring sons Mike (Gemma Killick), Patrick (Chantelle Maubert-Stewart), and Richard (Nicole Schmidt), and her grandchildren (to whom she will always be Ganny) Juliet, Freddie, and Graham. Liz was loved by her brothers James (Penny) and Phil Arthur (Mary Wilson) and her sister Kate Arthur (John McLaughlin). She will be missed deeply by her nephews and nieces, and many friends including Linda Ferguson and Kristen Campbell.

Liz was born on October 24, 1950 to John and Patricia Arthur of Toronto, and grew up in Lawrence Park. She attended Blythwood Public School and Bishop Strachan School, where her curious mind was nurtured. She studied at Trent University and spent her summers as a camper and staff member at YWCA Camp Tapawingo, both experiences which had an indelible impact on her and provided her with lifelong friendships.

Liz was an advocate for her family, for her friends, for her community, and for a more fair and peaceful world. She gave of herself enthusiastically, whether on school councils, neighbourhood associations, as a co-founder of Armour Heights Baseball League, or volunteering for causes that inspired her. She approached her work just as enthusiastically, especially during her years with Balmur Entertainment and Anne Murray. 

Family came first for Liz. She was fiercely proud of her family, and inspired them to make their communities more just and equitable. She passed on a love of music (especially The Beatles) and movies (The Sound of Music was a favourite). More than anything, she valued time well spent with those she loved - whether around the dinner table, on the back deck at home, in the living room at the Arthur family farm in Claremont, lakeside on a dock, or while relaxing on the couch or in a Muskoka chair. Her cheeriness and warm hugs made any day better.

Those who wish to join our family to remember and celebrate Liz are invited to a service and reception at Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) in Toronto on Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. To honour Liz, those attending are encouraged to wear some yellow.

Liz had many causes that were important to her, including those that focus on health and wellness (particularly Parkinson’s and cancer), children and youth (including access to sport and recreation, summer camp, and the arts), international development, and the environment. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to be made in Liz’s memory to a charity of your choice that supports one of these causes or one that is meaningful to you.
