Obituary of Ilonka Alexandra Van Steenwyk

Ilonka Alexandra Van Steenwyk passed peacefully December 3, 2022 with her children by her side.
Ilonka leaves behind her husband Jan Ruijl, her children Ryan McCaffrey, Shawna McCaffrey (Frank), her grandchildren Clea Alexandra McCaffrey, Dallas Anton McCaffrey (Cailey), her stepchildren John Ruijl, Paul Ruijl, Peter Ruijl (Anita), Ann Colin-Ruijl (Rick). 

Ilonka will be deeply missed by many friends in Toronto and the surrounding areas.

Born February 14, 1947 in Wormerveer Netherlands Ilonka moved with her family to Scarborough Canada after a brief stay in Dutch Guiana (Suriname) when she was 8 years old.
Ilonka married in 1968 and started a family in 1970 before going back to school to earn her Bachelor of Social Work. Ilonka enjoyed some time working at Toronto Metro University (formerly Ryerson) and the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto before accepting a position at Brock University in St Catherine’s Ontario where she will be missed by many friends and colleagues.
After retirement Ilonka and Jan travelled extensively making stops in Holland and Australia to visit family.
In September 2022 she moved back to Scarborough to be closer to her children and grandchildren for the remainder of her days.

A gathering of family and friends will take place at Humphrey Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Avenue, on Friday December 9, 2022 from 11:00am - 3:00pm.
