Obituary of Charles Fremont Scott
Passed away suddenly at the cottage surrounded by family on August 30, 2022. Born in Ottawa, Charles was the son of Charles Frémont Scott and Pauline Miriam Scott (née Hill). He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Catherine Anne Scott (née Rayment), his beloved children Charles (Laura) of Kingston, Heather Davidson (Adam) of Vancouver and Jennifer Wellman (Michael) of Toronto, his brothers Andrew (Erika) of Vancouver and Paul of Ottawa, his eight cherished grandchildren Alex, Sabrina and Orion Scott, Jake and Bailey Davidson, and Olivia, Riley and Matthew Wellman, nieces Elizabeth (Andrew), Katherine (Bradley), Caroline, and Christine (Mitch) and their families.
Charles attended the University of Toronto, graduating with an Honours BA in Political Science and Economics in 1969, and an LLB in 1972. Charles began his career at Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington where he became a leading commercial litigator. He subsequently moved to Ogilvy Renault, and eventually joined Lax O’Sullivan Scott.
Charles and Cathy were big supporters of the arts with subscriptions to various arts events over the years. Charles was a long-time director of the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown (of which his father had been a founder). P.E.I. was always a favourite place to visit and was close to his and Cathy’s heart. He also had a long involvement with St. Christopher House in Toronto.
Charles was an excellent lawyer, but he had many other interests as well: family, golf, cars, food, travel, wine, and photography to name a few. The cottage on Big Rideau Lake has been the heart of family life in the summers for 4 generations, and one of his favourite places. Since 2007 Charles and Cathy have visited their medieval house in Pigna, Italy every spring and fall where they have enjoyed friendships with the locals and ex-pats, taking long meals on the terrazzo, as well as exploring large parts of Italy and France.
Charles’ profound generosity and kindness, intellectual curiosity, dry wit and sparkling sense of humour will live on in our hearts.
A funeral service will be held at Lawrence Park Community Church, 2180 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, on Friday September 9th at 1:00.
