We have all lost a great man too soon. Charles was an excellent mentor to me and so many others, and an excellent friend. We always admired his skill at saying the things that everyone was thinking, in an apparently 'politically incorrect' way, but saying them in such a way that people laughed and took the point and did not take false offence. He took that same skill into his litigation practice, crafting sentences that would leave a court chuckling while leaving no doubt that the other party was sorely misguided. Through so many stressful situations, I do not recall ever seeing him lose his cool good humour. (In fact, his fearless example made me realize that I could not match what was needed to be a 'top drawer' litigator like him, and that the corporate side, with "the seals" as Charles would say, was a better home for me.)
As "Carrot Top" and "Mrs. Carrot Top", we will cherish our memories of times with Charles - as so many will.

Dear Cathy and family,
I was shocked and saddened to learn from Andrew that you have lost your dearest Charles. I first knew him as “Scottie” when we celebrated at Blake family gatherings, often at Christmas. One year a sliding party took place on the hill beside the farmhouse. Those participating included two small, excited Scott boys, my brother Jim, Dad Charles and Grandpa Hill wearing a pair of borrowed earmuffs. They all returned with rosy cheeks.
Jim and I are unable to travel to Toronto, especially since Beth and Dave are in Spain but we all send you our love and sympathy. May you be comforted by each other and by the years of happy memories you share.

Dear Cathy and family,
It was with shock and deep sadness that I received news of Charles's sudden death.
Over many years, St Christopher House (now West Neighbourhood House) received great benefit from Charles's exceptional volunteer leadership to it's annual Art Affair and other special events. As a former St Chris executive director, it was my good fortune to be the beneficiary of Charles's warm smile, good sense of humour and a reliable source of sound advice.
Please accept my sincere condolences.
Charles will be greatly missed!

Hi - I'm writing as a friend and as a former client. I first came to know Charles professionally. He was masterful in his knowledge of the law and in his desk-side manner, giving good practical advice to me, a newcomer to the legal system.
I also began to discover other aspects of his character - a generous good nature, deep love for family, and support for important causes. It was clear I was dealing with a rounded person - a professional at the top of his game, and a human being who knew what mattered most.
Death always seems to come too early. I'm sorry that his family and friends will not have his company for many more years, though I hope sincerely that the good memories shine brighter as both comfort and example.
With condolences, best wishes, and gratitude,
Douglas Reid

Dear Cathy and Family,
We were shocked and heartbroken at the news of Charles’ passing. We give our deepest condolences to you and to Charles, Heather, Jennifer, Andrew, Paul and families.
Charles was a cherished friend and roommate from our early Vic days. His kindness, generosity and deep sense of sociability inspired many of us then and, with our friends and families after, to engage with one another and to continue to do so over the generations. More than any, Charles and you kept us all together for our own, and general community well being.
Charlie will continue to walk with us, and all who knew him, in joy and with a smile as always.
In fond remembrance of a great 'roomie', patron of beauty and lifelong friend,
With love,
Don, Elayne, Nick, Andy and Alexandra Jackson

Cathy & family,
I am so sorry to learn of Charles passing. Cathy, I have not seen you very often this summer on Briton Bay but have always valued our waterside chats from year to year. From the G & M obituary, it is clear that Charles was a gifted and remarkable individual. I know, from our conversations at the lake, how strong the bond is within your family and expect that you will have lots of support from your friends and family. For my part I can only wish your every strength in dealing with your loss.
