IAN DAVIDSON GRAHAM
MD , FRCP (C)
Dr. Graham, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 29, 2022, in his apartment in Toronto after having enjoyed one last family visit. He is survived by his sons, Gregory and Peter and his daughter, Vanessa, his grandchildren, Thomas, Bryn, Hugh, Jasmine, and Silas, and his great-grandsons, Simon and Dylan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne and his brothers, Donald, Harry, Gordon and Alan. He is survived by his sister Janet Webber.
Dr. Graham was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the fifth of six children of Dr. Nelson Graham and Gwenyth Tuttle. Ian graduated from the University of Western Ontario School of Medicine in 1958, before completing psychiatry residency training at the University of Rochester, post-residency fellowship at the Menninger School of Psychiatry, and psychoanalytic training at the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis. Upon completing his training, he returned to Toronto with his family in 1970 and began a 50-year private practice of psychiatry and psychoanalysis. He was a training and supervising psychoanalyst with the Toronto Institute for Psychoanalysis and was active in the Toronto and international psychoanalytic communities throughout his long career. In addition to his private practice in Toronto, Dr. Graham travelled regularly to his home town of Sault Ste. Marie to treat patients in that under-served area.
His interests spanned from model airplanes, basketball, rowing and tennis in his youth, to sports cars, First Nations art, avid baseball watching, reading widely, and model boats throughout his life. Annual trips to Key West defined his calendar. From first to last, he was a thoughtful and giving man.
