Obituary of Maureen Lois Helen Morris
Maureen Lois Helen Morris, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, June 26, 2022 at the age of 88. Maureen is survived by her husband of 37 years, Andrew Weishar; her three daughters, Bernadet, Rachele and Christine Racicot; her stepchildren David Weishar (Nancy), Kathleen Weishar, Gerald Weishar (Fran), Michael Weishar (Laurie); her grandchildren Chloe Briggs (Wayne), Julien, Paul, and Marc Chabot (April Dekkema), Laura and Jeannine Proudfoot; her step grandchildren Michael Weishar (Negar), Lee Weishar, Shelley Clarke Fraser (Duncan), Glenn Clarke (Jen), Karin Scott (Terry), Kristin, Alyssa and Jaymi Weishar; and her great grandchildren Annabel, Aliyah, Henry, Owain, Isabella, Katelyn, Liam, Dylan, Jake, Callum, and Bowen. She is predeceased by her beloved sons Paul and Lewis Racicot, her stepson Robert Weishar, and her seven siblings.
Maureen was born in Mayo, Quebec on March 28, 1934 and moved to Timmins at a young age. She married Gerald Racicot in November of 1955 and together they had five children. She found her groove in the art world of Timmins, working as a painter, potter, sculptor and weaver. She taught art classes at Roland Michener High School and Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology. She also worked as a recreation councillor at the Golden Manor for several years. Maureen ran a pottery studio and gift shop out of her home on Fourth Avenue in Schumacher, Ontario for many years. The glassed-in porch pottery store was a quaint shop to buy gifts for many occasions. Maureen’s work was exhibited at art galleries and museums all over Ontario, including the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where one of her pottery goblets was included in an exhibit of noted Ontario potters. She also created a tile pottery mural that, for decades, graced the interior of the Timmins Airport.
Maureen remarried on September 22, 1984 to Andrew Leo Patrick Weishar and they relocated to Mississauga, where she fulfilled a lifelong dream of obtaining a bachelor's degree in fine arts at Sheridan College. In the mid- 90’s, Maureen and Andy opened a gift shop called Ukukulu located in the Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto. They enjoyed travelling around the countryside visiting artists to acquire work to sell in their store. Around the same time, they decided to become gentlemen farmers. Maureen and Andy acquired a 65-acre property in Quadeville, Ontario where they worked tirelessly through the spring making the most delicious maple syrup.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm on Monday, July 4th. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 5th at 12:00 p.m. in Saint Gabriel’s Passionist Parish (670 Sheppard Avenue East). Reception will follow in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ontario Arts Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Toronto.
