Obituary of Mary Isabel Sanders

MARY ISABEL SANDERS (nee STAMPS)

May 15, 1922 - May 23, 2022

Mary passed away one week plus a day after a joyful celebration of her 100th birthday. Beloved wife of 10 years to the late Arthur Hayward (1955) and 34 years to the late Gordon Sanders (2002). Loving mom to Jim (Nancy), Julie (Bruce), Bob (Lesley), Paul (Ann), and stepmom to Lyall and Paul. Cherished grandmother to Laura (Michael), Joanna, Lindsay (Oniel), Graeme, Leah, and great grandmother to Callie.

Born in Toronto, Mary lived in the east end of the city near Main Street and Kingston Road and attended Norway Public School and Malvern High School. Before her marriage, she went to Teacher’s College, and her first teaching job was in a one room schoolhouse on a quiet country road near Goodwood, Ontario. After marrying, she lived in Montreal for many years where she had her four children. She moved back to Toronto after her husband died and lived in Leaside for the remaining 67 years of her life. Mary taught primary school for many years at the Hugh MacMillan Centre and at other schools in the TDSB.  Always smiling, she was an active member of Northlea United Church for many years, singing in the choir and a member of the UCW.  She will be missed by her caring companion Lucy and many wonderful neighbours in her condominium where she lived for 16 years prior to moving to her retirement residence.

Mary was supportive, caring, and full of unconditional love for her family. Her passion for life, sense of humour, and love of adventure led her to take her family on many road trips which created treasured memories of fun times and lessons learned along the way.

She will be cremated and a private interment will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 31st at Northlea United Church, 125 Brentcliffe Road, Toronto. Masks will be required.  If desired, memorial donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
