"Aunt" Mary Sanders and my mother, Joyce Schroeter, RIP, were lifelong best friends from the age of five. She was also my godmother. I have never met a more graceful, intelligent, gentle, kind and caring woman. She is one of the people who inspired me to be a teacher. I last spoke to her by phone in late November 2021 when consulted her for an article on teaching in the 1950s and 60s. Her memory, sense of humour, curiosity, intellect and attitude impressed me. However, I will always remember her graciousness and generosity, especially her willingness to speak to mom on the phone during the last weeks and day of her life (coincidenally May 22, 2020). Those conversations, though often one-sided toward the end, meant the world to my mom and to me. Mary will be remembered and celebrated by the entire Schroeter family.
