Krishan Gupta

Obituary of Krishan Chand Gupta

Krish, “Kris” as he was known to friends and colleagues, died peacefully at home, on Friday, April 22, 2022, at sunrise, overlooking his garden. Loving husband to Jean (nee Naser), who predeceased him in 2016, and adoring father to daughter Veena (Matthew).

From a family of hoteliers, Krish’s upbringing, training, and early life in hospitality would form everything he did.

Krish put his chef’s training to lifelong use, working his knife like a pro and producing meals that rivalled those from the best restaurants. Krish was the consummate host, he was a great listener, he was charming. An invitation to dinner at his house was always a delight. Krish loved a good party and a good laugh.

But the hours demanded by the hospitality industry did not suit Krish, so he followed the management aspect of his training and studied to become an accountant. The more education the better, as far as Krish was concerned. Krish went on to spend 28 years at the CBC. He was a news junkie and adored his work in National Radio News, particularly working with national and foreign correspondents.

Krish’s background in hospitality taught him to be approachable by all. One moment he could be dealing with a minor issue in a regional location, and the next he was solving an issue for a foreign correspondent in a remote and dangerous location. Krish was a trusted advisor to all, and a mentor to others. He would greet everyone with a warm hello whenever he entered a department, no matter how serious an issue he was dealing with in the moment. Krish enjoyed doing pro bono work for many colleagues and friends at tax time.

Krish had a green thumb. Passersby would often remark on his gorgeous, welcoming garden. While Krish courted Jean in London, he would take her weekly bouquets of cut flowers from the garden he maintained at his flat. He continued this ritual throughout their marriage, adding a second bouquet for his daughter.

During his beloved wife’s prolonged illness, Krish cared for Jean with the attention of one raised in hospitality. He anticipated her needs, tended to her every whim, and awakened her each morning with a cup of tea, as he did for 51 years.

Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Mt. Sinai Hospital for their outstanding care. Extended and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. David Tannenbaum at Mt. Sinai for exceptional care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Department of Family Medicine, Research and Education at the Sinai Health Foundation.

To ensure safety for all during the pandemic, a gathering will be held at a later date.
