I just learned a few moments ago that John passed away.
We first met through Ontario Young Liberals in the 80s as we were all finishing up school, enjoying our work on various political campaigns and beginning careers on the Hill and at Queen's Park. We always had great conversations about politics and when we both became government relations advisors, we chatted about how wonderful it was to be able to work in a field that combined our passion for politics and policy with our interest in business.
We moved to Stratford a couple years ago and during the pandemic, I often thought how great it would be to re-connect with John and Jill as we emerged from various lockdowns. My heartfelt sympathies - John will be dearly missed by all of us who were fortunate to know him.

Jill and family. I was, like so many others, saddened to hear the news of John's sudden passing. Over the 35 or so years I have known John I have always admired his great insights and friendly personality. He always treated me, just a guy from Bruce County with respect and as a friend.

I am in shock over John's death, as are all his UTS classmates and friends. In 1980-81 I had the privilege of being in John's Additional English class, taught by our beloved teacher Norah Maier. The class was taught from Norton Major Authors edition. At the beginning of the year, Mrs. Maier took a vote which established that we would do the texts in reverse order, beginning in the twentieth century. The first text we read was T.S. Eliot ``The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock''. We spent time on nineteenth century pre-Raphaelite authors like Dante Gabriel Rossetti. John was particularly fond of the ''pre-Raphs''. This meant that we didn't spend much time on Chaucer and none at all on Beowulf, but this class was one of the best I ever had. John's presence in the class was larger than life -- he was never at a loss for words, always ready with a withering repartee.
John contributed to much at so many levels -- to UTS, to Ontario and to Canada. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

We met John - and Jill and subsequently Martine - at our birthing class in 2000. We lost touch over the years, but we remember incredible conversations and commiserations about any number of topics. While the girls were babies and toddlers, many of those conversations centred around being new parents. John was a devoted and spectacularly proud parent. The love for his family was so evident in every one of his fantastic smiles.
We send our love to Jill, Martine, Simone and the rest of John's family and friends. We wish there were words we could share to immediately temper your grief. Memories of him will help. Much love, Heather, David & Rissa

John was a life force I couldn't resist. Whether it was when we became god parents to Winnie Graham, or sat in his house, a bar or saying hello as he walked down Wellington st and I from the Senate. I so enjoyed John, and his loyal friendship to Caspar. Jill, I didn't know John in his family life, but loss is loss and it takes a long time to heal. I'll be thinking of you and your daughters. Shalom, Nancy Ruth

Shocked and saddened, i offer my heartfelt sympathies to John's family.
I first met John when we were university students.
We were involved in politics together and debating issues.
He could be intense. He was driven but always had a welcoming smile.
He will be remembered.
May he rest in peace.

I first met John or "Duffy" as he always seemed to be called, at Ontario Young Liberals (OYL) conventions - he was part of the very strong delegation from U of T. Young Liberals organized to support party reform; to move forward policy ideas and we honed our skills on endless political campaigns.
The alumni of that original group of young Liberals (older now) continues to be active on public policy issues and provincial and federal campaigns. John was energetic, strategic and whip smart - and we worked on so many campaigns together.
In the relatively small world of GR and Communications in Ottawa, a walk down Queen Street will see you meeting many many friends and colleagues. You stop and have a chat about the government, an election campaign or the latest political gossip. But - most importantly - whenever I met John while we would have 30 seconds of generalized political chit-chat the conversation would quickly change to updates on his daughters - he was so proud of you and glowed with pride when he spoke.
His loss reverberates through such a large network of friends and colleagues across Canada -
May his memory forever be a blessing.

I am at a loss for words at John's sudden passing, but full of feelings. He would never have been at a loss for words! He was my friend in high school, and every encounter since then has been a pleasure, full of his characteristic warmth and energy. He will be missed terribly by people like me so I can only imagine who it must be for his family, and no doubt countless friends, to whom I send my deepest, and heartfelt condolences.
As a visual artist, I wish I could pay tribute to my old friend in some visual way. He's one of those people who was so outsized in energy, personality and impact (from an early age) that he is like a pillar you feel will always be there... until he turns out to be mortal after all. I know I am in very good company in feeling this way. Goodbye John, old friend. </3

John at 20 (I think), and the book in his hand is almost certainly Gravity's Rainbow. Not only the smartest guy in the room but ferociously clever, with nicknames for everyone and original turns of phrase for everything. Sui generis. Gleefully opinionated. Extraordinarily creative and multi-talented. Your worst nightmare as an opponent in the hat game. John loved his friends deeply and never let you forget it, even when he was mad at you. He mellowed over the years but retained a larger-than-life quality and a hunger for knowledge and experience that made him indelible and unforgettable. Jill, Martine and Simone, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Love, Kate Fillion
