Obituary of Patrick James Mars

PATRICK JAMES MARS

April 19, 1940 – February 21, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patrick on February 21st, after complications due to Dementia and Alzheimer disease.

Born in Hampshire, England, to Kathleen and James Mars, Patrick grew up in the UK and moved to

Canada in 1958 to attend McGill University where he completed both his undergraduate degree and an

MBA.  Patrick fell in love with life in Canada and upon graduation he stayed in Montreal and began

working in the investment business with a concentration in the Canadian mining industry.  He met

his wife of 51 years, Robin, on the ski hill in Quebec and they moved to Toronto in 1971 when he joined the investment firm Alfred Bunting.  After a long career with Bunting, he worked his way up the ranks to become President and CEO and helped facilitate a merger with the internationally renowned firm S.G. Warburg to create Bunting Warburg.  After an unsuccessful attempt at retirement, Patrick accepted a position with National Bank.  He and Robin moved to the U.K. from 1999 to 2003, where they expanded new friendships and loved being close to Patrick’s family.

Patrick held a number of positions within the industry, including Governor of the Toronto Stock Exchange and Director of the Investment Dealers Association.  In 1995, he was awarded the Robert Elver Mineral Economics Award by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.  In later years, Patrick continued to hold a number of directorships within the Canadian Mining industry and advocated for the industry outside of Canada.

Patrick had a strong love for the great outdoors, adventure, and travel. He loved his weekly sailing at

the RCYC in the summer months and exploring ski hills in the winter. His favourite thing in the world

was sailing at the cottage on Georgian Bay with a boat full of grandchildren.

Patrick was predeceased by his wife Robin, and will be greatly missed by his children, Anthea and Euan Mars; his grandchildren, Griffin, Beckett and Annika Mars of Toronto and Henry and Poppy Turner of the UK; and his sister, Anthea (Stephen Savage) of the UK.

A celebration of Patrick’s life will be held at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) on Saturday, April 9th at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. Full vaccination and masks are required. A live streaming link will also be made available for the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
