Obituary of Geoffrey Guy
GEOFFREY GUY
Geoffrey passed away peacefully on February 16, 2022 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He will be remembered with love by Marin, his wife of 24 years and their three children Will, Olivia and Charlie. Born to George and Beverly Guy on December 13, 1962, brother to Jennifer (Larry Eastman), Sheila (David McCracken) and David (Philippa Barber). Fun uncle to Sarah, Stuart, David, Hayden, Paige, Sophie, Grace, Connor, Rebecca and Sam.
Geoffrey had remarkable strength of character, loyalty and generosity. He lived by clear principles, and he never wavered. The touchstones of his life were family, work and physical activity, and he swung for the fences on all three. He viewed life with a glass half-full attitude. He didn’t dwell on the tough times. He faced the challenges cancer presented with courage, kindness and humour.
From birth, Geoffrey, his siblings and many cousins spent summers at Sydenham Lake. This had a formative effect on all of them, but particularly on Geoffrey. A unique cast of characters housed in a string of 100-year old cottages in varying stages of improvement, the family compound at Sydenham was a haven for good old-fashioned fun. Epic water fights; howling at the moon; pontificating on the screened-in porch at 4am; hitting drivers off the dock aimed at nearby cottages, Geoffrey was in the middle of it all, his happy place.
After four years at Bishop’s University, where he was VP of Finance in his final year, Geoffrey embarked on a fulfilling career in the investment business. He was a Portfolio Manager for RBC Dominion Securities for 32 years. He loved the job, the ever-changing markets, and his work-hard laugh-hard team. Investment decisions were made with care. Geoffrey played the long game looking for value in quality investments. He always asked the question - is this the best thing for my client?
Geoffrey and Marin bought a hobby farm in King just after they got married. Nothing topped a sunny weekend day where Geoffrey could use his tractor, loud cutting machinery, the chipper, bush hog or gator. Harry, the dog he didn’t want, became his much loved and loyal four-legged companion, always up for the day’s adventure and right by Geoffrey’s side. A keen cyclist, he could often be found riding the country roads and hills of Caledon. He trained and competed for 10 straight years in the challenging (and usually hot) Rideau Lakes cycling race from Ottawa to Kingston. Geoffrey and Marin and the kids skied and raced at the Caledon Ski Club and the kids competed in the Collingwood circuit. Geoffrey loved these years. He couldn’t wait for the next race, and was always up for off-season training in Whistler, Colorado and Sun Peaks. Outside of the ski season, Geoffrey loved family time in Bermuda. He embraced it all, knee socks and blazers, riding his hog (moped) and walking the pink sand beaches. Geoffrey was a cheerful and fun loving addition to the Coral Beach Club where they knew to have a Dark and Stormy ready for him.
Sociable, direct, and fiercely loving, Geoffrey was equally famous for his ridiculous side. He had a strong sense of the absurd; he emanated positive energy and he was in direct and constant contact with his inner child. Life with him was always fun. He will be deeply missed.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23rd. A celebration of Geoffrey’s life will be held on Friday, February 25th in Grace Church on-the-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Road, at 1:00 pm. Proof of vaccination is required for both events. Thanks goes out to so many of the staff in the University Health Network who were critical in Geoffrey’s care particularly Dr. Cypel and Dr. Razak and their teams, and the doctors and nurses in the Mt Sinai ICU.
