Daniel Damov

Obituary of Daniel Damov

Dan, aged 94, passed away peacefully at home Friday afternoon, January 7th, surrounded by family. Beloved husband of the late Elisabeth (Ebeth) for 66 years; dear father of Nathalie and Charles; cherished grandfather of Yukon; brother of the late Kamen Damov; much loved uncle of Mariana in Bulgaria, Daniel in Montreal, and Anke, Birte, and Gero in Germany.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, he moved to Paris at age 20.  There he earned a law degree from the University of Paris, met and married Ebeth, and started a family with the birth of Nathalie.

After immigrating to Canada in 1951, Dan enjoyed a distinguished career as an executive in the insurance business.  He served as President and CEO of the Insurance  Bureau of Canada, President and CEO of The Travelers Insurance Company of Canada, and Chairman of the Board of Zurich Canada. Dan was appointed to the Boards of Directors of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Cogeco Inc., and The Arthritis Society, as well as various academic and government advisory boards, committees and task forces.  He was also a Trustee Emeritus at The Quetico Foundation.

Dan (Dani to family) was an elegant and cultured man.  He treasured his family and friends and showered them with gracious generosity and hospitality.  Dan was known as an eloquent speaker and enthusiastic conversationalist.  He loved to read for pleasure and he did so at every opportunity.  Perhaps his fondest activity was travelling the globe with his dear Ebeth.
