Obituary of Elizabeth Anne Dulmage

Elizabeth Anne Dulmage (nee McTavish) Dec 2, 1943 - December 30, 2021

Leaves behind her partner and best friend Peter Bigney, her children Jennifer (Mac) and Scott Dulmage, her beloved grandchildren Jack and Emma Christensen and Evan and Ella Dulmage. Liz predeceases her brother Rob (Linda) and leaves behind many nieces and nephews. She was Grandma Liz to granddaughters Noa, Miri, and Livia Wilner of Ottawa.

She also leaves behind her good friend Steve Dulmage and had a great fondness for Tom Christensen and Carley Dulmage.

Liz spent 62 years as a member of the Granite Club where she enjoyed swimming, tennis, squash, fitness and bridge.

Over the years she volunteered with several organizations such as The Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Salvation Army and Juvenile Diabetes. She greatly enjoyed her years buying jewelry for the Art Gallery of Ontario gift shop.

Liz spent every summer of her life on an island in Bayfield Inlet, Georgian Bay, her cottage became the family compound where the family often gathered. Grandma’s boot camp meant all four of her grandchildren spent at least a week alone with grandma at the cottage, and she loved having the grandchildren appearing from their own cottages through the woods for chicken sandwiches, butter tart squares and cookies, and maybe a swim, kayaking, or just ‘hanging around’.

Our mother was truly the family matriarch. She approached her final days with her usual vigour and steely determination. She was extremely busy in her final months organizing everything she possibly could, so her family would not be inconvenienced by her passing. She was not afraid to play the ‘cancer card’, or her impending death, as a means to a quicker resolution to a roadblock. The poor young teller at the bank was left speechless when in typical mom-fashion she frankly told her ‘I need the name on my cheques corrected immediately, I am dying and have a lot of cheques to write in the next month, and furthermore you should know what a ‘cheque register’ is’’!. Mom bravely arranged to utilize Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) so she could depart with dignity and on her own terms, we are so proud of her. Indomitable to the end.

We love you mom, and are heartbroken. We truly will miss your direction and guidance, although we may have given you a different impression at times over the years.

She wishes to thank Lisa, Marie, and Angela for all their love and support. She wishes to convey her great appreciation to the staff, nurses, and doctors at Sunnybrook hospital, the Odette Centre, and Princess Margaret for their care over the past six years in her battle with cancer.
