Obituary of Ernest Mutti
Ernie passed away on December 21, 2021, having decided not to do battle with acute cancer and instead to go bravely into that dark night and join the love of his life, Kathi, who had predeceased him by a year. He was a proud father to Susan (Ken), Ron (Eh) and Dennis (Kathy), grandfather to Jackie (Jay), Steven, Sammy (Blair), Robbie (Emily), BJ and Thomas, and great-grandfather to Charlie. He is survived by his sister, Christine, and predeceased by his sister, Greti.
Ernie was born in the Emmenthal, in Switzerland, and grew up in Konolfingen. He discovered a passion for farming early in life and determined to immigrate to Canada, where land could be had and hard work paid off. First, however, he bowed to his parents' wishes and learned a trade - goldsmith. He and Kathi married in eastern Ontario soon after they both immigrated in 1956. Fate, in the form of a serious accident, put an end to the farming life for a time and they moved to Toronto, starting a farmily and a jewelry business. A huge moment was the move to their own home, in Leaside, in 1970.
The better part of Ernie's professional life was divided between his work as a goldsmith, which earned him a reputation as a master craftsman across the country, and as a farmer, with frequent visits to the "homestead" at Dixon's Corners. Life with Ernie may not always have been easy, but it was certainly never dull. He was opinionated and hard-working, and seemed to have endless energy. He will be remembered as a generous bon vivant, a gifted artisan, a happy farmer and gardener, and a devoted husband. In recent months, he spoke often of his wife as though she were still present. It is comforting to think that the two of them may now be together again.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ernie's memory may be made to the Salvation Army in Canada (http://donate.salvationarmy.ca) or Switzerland ((https://www.heilsarmee.ch/). Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com
