Obituary of Peter John Dalton

PETER JOHN DALTON

August 2, 1930 - November 14, 2021

It is with profound grief that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather
and the lifelong companion of Patricia. After some recent health challenges he left us peacefully around
family under the devoted care of the medical team at the Princess Margaret Palliative Care Unit.

Peter leaves behind his children, Andrew, Susan and Randall, along with their spouses Julie, Craig and
Eva. He was blessed to have seven grandchildren, namely Blake, Kelly, Holly, Emily, Scott, Katie and
Lauren. Over the past year he was fortunate to be able to welcome and spend time with his newborn
great-grandchildren, Denver, Archer and Kennedy. Peter was predeceased by his parents Peter and Anne
Dalton.

Peter was born in Montreal and moved to Toronto in his early years when his father formed Dalton
Engineering and Construction in 1940. He followed in his footsteps, and after graduating from Forest Hill Collegiate he went on to The University of Toronto where he completed an Engineering Degree. In the years following he added a Master of Commerce Diploma to his credentials. After University he worked in the construction industry for a few years and then joined his father in 1957. In the mid-1960s he took over as President and in 1974 assumed ownership. During his career he obtained many industry awards with the most significant being receipt of the Centennial Medal for the Heritage Restoration of St. Lawrence Hall, which still stands as a Toronto landmark. As a leader in the industry, he was honoured to serve as Chairman of The Ontario General Contractors Association in 1966 and the Toronto Construction Association respectively. Of equal importance to him beyond business success were the relationships he had working alongside his sons and the remarkable staff at The Dalton Company.

Outside of business, Peter enjoyed volunteer pursuits and served on The Board of Directors for many
notable not-for-profit institutions. The most important of these endeavors to him was the time he spent
on the Board of St. Andrews College. He acted as Chairman of the Foundation, which manages the
investment portfolio to support the endowment and other school initiatives. When his time serving the
College concluded he established the Dalton Family Bursary, which has been in place for 26 years and
allows a student to attend SAC when they otherwise would not be able to afford the opportunity.

All of his societal contributions aside, what was most cherished to Peter was his family, and number one
was the one love of his life, Patricia. He met her in high school, and once smitten he committed all his
personal energy to her fulfillment. This dedication went on to a marriage that lasted sixty-three years,
and during that time they were inseparable. They spent time travelling, but were most content at
Woodmere Island on Lake Rosseau enjoying time with family and friends. They also enjoyed many years at the St. Andrews Club in Delray Beach, Florida. Losing Pat in 2018 was difficult for Peter, and combined with the COVID isolation he had to endure, we pray they are now reunited.

To sum up his life, we will never encounter someone so committed to his wife, family, friends and
associates. He will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of his company.
