Judith Wilder

Obituary of Judith Ryrie Wilder

JUDITH “BILLIE” RYRIE WILDER

Passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2021. Born in 1928 in Toronto, the daughter of Edward William Bickle and Helen Ryrie Bickle. She was predeceased by her half-brother Thomas Henry Bickle; her husband William Price Wilder; and "Bob," her beloved black labrador retriever. Billie will be sadly missed by her four children (spouses): Martha; Bill; Tom (Sylvie); Andrew (Lori); and five grandchildren: Elle (Jeff), Mac, Justin, Neal, Meaghan (Jordan); and one adorable great-grandchild, Charlie. Although her birth certificate stated Judith as her name, she was christened "Billie" and was affectionately called "Billie" throughout her life.

She attended Havergal College followed by McGill University. Interested in pursuing a career in journalism, she enrolled in Lorne Green's Radio Academy. Soon afterwards, however, she met Dad to whom she was married for over 66 years. Mom was Dad's "chief business advisor" and trusted support throughout his distinguished business career. She was a voracious reader; enjoyed gardening; was active in tennis and skiing as well as fishing in Georgian Bay and sailing in Passamaquoddy Bay. She later learned to play bridge, but in her modest way said that she was not very good - her opponents knew better!  She was kind, loyal, wise, and generous to family and friends. As a philanthropist she consistently supported the arts, education, health care, and social services over many years and made transformative gifts to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and The Toronto Rehab Hospital. The surrounding area of The E.W. Bickle Centre will soon be complemented by "The Billie Wilder Therapy Gardens".

The family is grateful to the incredible care provided by Jenny Biso, Regie Rodriguez, and Sherika Lindsay as well as Dr. Meuser, Dr. Walji, and Nurse Nellie Savina from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care.

A private family service will take place.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her name can be made to the UHN Foundation in support of Toronto Rehab or to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.  Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
