Sylvia Lowry

Obituary of Sylvia Lowry

Sylvia Elinda (Sauro) Lowry

April 16, 1931 - February 26, 2021

Sylvia Lowry of Toronto passed peacefully in her home on Friday, February 26, 2021. She was a woman full of talents.

As a craftsman, she made her own paper, including growing the ingredients to make it.  She was an amazing weaver, creating beautiful towels and scarves.  She thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Burr House and all the weavers and potters that created alongside her.

She was a teacher and a librarian.  She was musical, playing the piano, the cello and as a singer was a member of the Leslie Bell Singers.  She helped create the North York Symphony Orchestra (now North York Concert Orchestra) because there wasn't any venue for musicians in North York to play together.

After raising us kids, in1972 she attended York University in order to get her BA in Language and Music, so she could return to teaching.  She made the Dean's List.  She retired in the capacity of school librarian.

She was a voracious reader, particularly of Canadian authors.  There are many first edition books in her collection.

She had the most incredible group of friends, a group of 18 who regularly attended chamber concerts followed by dinner out.  She had close friends from High School right to the end.  What remained of the Chamber group became the Bridge gals who met every week until Mom could no longer attend.

She was an avid tennis player, playing for years with Cinna and Johnny.  She and Dad traveled to Mexico, China, Italy France and England.  They were avid bird watchers and they loved each other for 61 years

She is survived and sorely missed by her three children, Linda, Paul and Monica, her two grandchildren, Brett and Marcus, and her great-grandchild, Nakayda. She was surrounded by family and love until the end.
