Obituary of Eileen Ryan
ELLEN (EILEEN) THERESA RYAN
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Eileen in the palliative care unit of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, February 20, 2021 in her 81st year. Eileen was born in County Limerick in Ireland. She was predeceased by her parents Jackie and Margaret Ryan and her younger brother Gerry. Survived by siblings: Mary (Pat), Michael (Marie, deceased), Gretta (John, deceased), Patricia (Richard), Lily (John), Cecilia (Jim), Phil (Conor), Eamonn (Mary) and sister-in-law Mary. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephew around the world, with special thanks to nieces Marie-Louise and Brid who had been such a comfort and support to her.
Eileen studied nursing in London, England and chose to start her career here in Canada. She rose through the ranks to leadership positions in both hospital and community settings. She was a champion of those less fortunate and/or those who could not speak for themselves. In retirement she was active on boards of several senior care facilities.
Eileen was passionate about many things. She was a staunch Liberal supporter, loved golf and aquafit, travelled widely and enjoyed good food and fine wine. Her place was the favourite hangout for neighbourhood animals, large and small. She was a confidant to many far and wide. Whether you knew her for months, years, or decades, Eileen welcomed everyone with kindness, acceptance and humour. She enjoyed holding court with neighbours and friends.
Her Irish family wishes to give special thanks to Barbara, Pat, Sandy, Sherry and Jane, who provided staunch and loving support to a dear friend in their absence.
Eileen has been cremated and per her wishes a funeral mass was held in her hometown in Ireland. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Good Shepherd Centre (goodshephercentres.ca) or Wellspring (wellspring.ca). Condolences can be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
