I met Brendan in our first week of college in 1979 and we remained great and dear friends ever since. Brendan had all the attributes that you could want in a friend. He was loyal, generous, witty, and never took himself too seriously. He was the best of company. We were housemates for a few years and no matter how down you found yourself he could always cheer you up. He was gifted in his ability in getting people to laugh.
In the late 80s, I met up with Brendan on a work trip to Boston when coincidentally a group of us who were friends at College were all in the Boston area at the same time. It was a rare occasion and one that I will never forget. Brendan invited us all to his apartment for dinner one of the evenings and I remember crying I laughed that much from the craic and the slagging that went on all evening. It was better than any comedy show you could ever imagine.
It was great that I was able to meet Brendan, Marian and sometimes Kate on their visits to Ireland over the last few years and I am very appreciative of the O’Friel clan for letting me join in on their get-togethers.
In your lifetime you are very fortunate to meet a person like Brendan and he will be sadly missed by us all, but we all have very fond memories which we will cherish.
Thanks Brendan, for the camaraderie and all the good times that we shared.

Brendan was without doubt the most witty, generous, kind-hearted, good natured fellow to ever come out of Donegal. His astonishing gift was to make people he met feel good.
We knew Brendan from the NIHE college days in 1979, in Angela’s Ashes Limerick. He was the coolest of the whole group of friends (by a long shot, but little competition!). No social media back then but Brendan always knew what was happening, and introduced many of us to real music, water sports, lots of craic (fun) and much more.
A 10 hour+ bus journey to Donegal meant spending great weekends together in Limerick (doing anything except study!). Even telephones were a luxury, those days most of us made one weekly 3 minute public phone call home, indeed lucky if once a week, as it cost the price of a beer! Sometimes the Donegal lads would hitch hike separately to Donegal which could range from 6 hours to I recall Brendan’s overnight wait in a remote Mayo village (he told us he built a wall there while waiting).
Many years later a Great Race was re-enacted from Limerick to Donegal when Brendan, John and Mike left on Christmas Eve to get home for Christmas. Brendan won, after wisely suggesting that his was the only decent car. Of the other two, John drove 30 minutes when his car broke down and decided to hitch hike. Mike luckily took 12 hours to get there in an old Mini (car) picking up John in the middle of a pitch-black Sligo road.
He also introduced many of us to eccentric Limerick bars (still unknown in Tripadvisor). On one particular evening in the first bar we entered, the owner didn’t like the look or maybe sound of our voices, and wouldn’t serve us. Someone! had the great idea to stay for as long as it took us to drink the invisible pints just served. Brendan ensured more laughter than if we’d been served, much to the owner’s despair.
He also instilled a love in many of us of the outdoors, whether in remote wilderness or at folk festivals. He’s responsible for plane loads of camping gear going from Canada to Ireland after fabulous holidays (much of it still used by the next generation to go to more civilised festivals ). In the wild, there is no better person to make a feast of little and to entertain while doing it.
Indeed, for many of us, Brendan led a life we dreamed of, with a great thank you to Marian and Kate.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis
(May his faithful soul be at the right hand of God)
My brother Bernard put it nicely in words when told, saying “Just hearing his name brings a smile to my face… RIP Brendan”

Marian & Kate,
Sorry for your loss. I have wonderful memories of Brendan that will stay with me forever. He was a wonderful individual with a big heart. Brendan had a great sense of humour and a bubbling personality and was fun to be around. He was vivacious and enthusiastic about life. Always remembered, never forgotten.
Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.

I have so many lovely memories of times we spent with Brendan during holidays and family events here in London, Donegal and Canada.
Brendan was a generous, kind hearted and funny guy, a wonderful host with a ‘mi casa, tu casa’ philosophy. His love of the outdoor life and sports meant that there was always something organised during our visits to Canada. Fun times were had with Brendan BBQing massive steaks, canoeing and fishing in Manitoulin Island, a favourite place that he said reminded him of his native Donegal. We shared a love of sport and he would enjoy reminding me when my football team weren’t performing. But when it came to GAA, he had limited bragging rights! On his last visit to Ireland, we had a memorable evening in Dungloe watching Irish dancing and singing whilst sinking the odd pint of Guinness.
So when the final whistle was prematurely blown on Brendan’s life, family and friends should fill the void and sadness in their hearts with Brendan’s positivity and zest for life. He will be missed but not forgotten.
Love - Declan x

I have known Brendan for over 40 years, having first met him in our first year in university in Limerick in 1979.
Brendan was always a people person - he liked being around people and people very much liked to be around him. Even those that only had a casual encounter with Brendan spoke fondly of him. It didn’t take more than a few minutes for people to pick up on his warm and welcoming nature.
He was funny, always with a quick remark, and kind. He was sharp witted and he had that rare ability to put someone in their place without appearing offensive, and have them laughing at the rebuke. Once in our first year in university as we sat in the canteen, we were joined by the chaplain, who was a rather portly gentleman, and after some discussion about our future prospects, commented that we will end up as fat cats in a few years. Without missing a beat Brendan replied - ‘so we will end up like you Father’. This was followed by Brendan’s trademark hearty laugh. The chaplain took it well and joined in the laughter.
Another time in our first year, I saw Brendan going up the stairs after a lecture as I was heading to the canteen. When I got there Brendan was sitting down - I said to him “I could have sworn I just saw you heading up the stairs”. That’s when I discovered that Brendan had an identical twin brother, John, who was visiting from Donegal. Brendan had some great stories about being an identical twin, including my favorite, where Brendan got the free Christmas drink in Letterkenny when the barman mistook him for John.
After university we went our own way for a few years. I ended up in Toronto and Brendan in Boston. I visited him there shortly after arriving in Canada and I was singing the praises of all things Canadian and describing how impressive everything was in Toronto. We were looking out on a large body of water near Salem and I commented that lake Ontario was probably much bigger. Brendan then informed me, with a good laugh, that we were looking out on the Atlantic!
Shortly afterwards, Brendan applied for a work permit for Canada and came to Toronto where we worked together for several years.
Brendan loved the outdoors - camping, walking, swimming, sailing and even recently canoeing. He put his name on a waiting list at the boat house on the waterfront about 6 years ago and got notification in the spring of 2020 that a spot was finally available. He purchased a canoe and we took it out on the lake one morning and found that we were a bit unstable to say the least, but we did make it back to shore without tipping. Brendan decided that a different style of canoe might be more stable and he managed to get a deal on one. We headed out on the lake to give it a try, but it did not seem to be any more stable and on the way back, we were hit by a small wave and over we went. Lake Ontario is still pretty cold in early June. With the help of a few kayakers, we made it back to shore, bodies and boat fully intact, only egos slightly damaged!
Brendan also loved motorsports, everything from rallying to Formula 1. Basically, anything that was fast and loud. Over the years we attended the Indy 500 in Toronto, enjoyed a few trips to Mosport speedway and had a few great weekends in Montreal for Formula 1.
Having recently retired, I was very much looking forward to spending more time with Brendan, getting out and doing some hiking, playing golf and even trying to improve my canoeing skills. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
Brendan was a dear friend and I will miss him greatly.

Myself and Brendan go back a long way (almost 60 years) in fact we shared the same bed until 14 years of age, always close by day and even closer at night.
I only have joyful memories of life in Knocknamona playing cowboys and Indians while in our pyjamas until lunchtime making forts/castles with pillows and cushions; then rambling outside in the afternoons, cycling through the forest, feeding the chickens and Banty Hens and only coming back home when overcome with hunger. We learned how to pluck hens, had a pet wild duck, a pet crow, a dog and some half-wild cats.
As we grew older together with older brother Patrick we played football with the neighbours, namely John and Vincent McGlynn, Patrick Murray, The Cannons and The Gallens (of Carnamuggagh). A Carnamuggagh/Knocknamona select frequently challenged Gortlee to a game, usually played on Devenney’s farm.
National School was not a priority for us boys, homework was for the girls Shirley, Anne and Yvonne; we were more interested in feeding the pigs and playing.
We had a close family circle, The Coyles and The Friels. We enjoyed frequent visits to the cousins, The Currans in Letterkenny Town; Auntie Nora’s “high tea” and home-made Victoria Sponge was legendary. Visiting The Ferrys of Tullybeg meant football and assisting with farm chores. The Shields of Tamney was about helping out at the grocery store and petrol pumps. Going to Portsalon with Uncle Leo was to help Uncle Alfie gather the spuds (potatoes). Brendan learned his cooking skills while watching Auntie Annie and Mary T cook for all the workers. Granny-sitting in Gortnavern when Auntie Veronica went dancing in the Fiesta Ballroom in Letterkenny, off she would go in her grey Anglia Ford car. Great memories of Grannys, collecting water at Jimmy Scott’s well, trying to master the dry toilet and helping Granny in her cottage garden. There was always great excitement when a surprise parcel was delivered from Auntie Josie and Uncle Gabriel in San Francisco. We all had a lot of work to do redecorating the house in preparation for Fr John’s visit home from Fresno – all good memories!
Dad Brendan’s sudden death at Easter 1971 was a major blow to everyone. Somehow we eventually came to terms with his passing. Mum Kathleen learned to drive, taking us in her mini car on a camping trip around Ireland, what fun we had. We moved to live in Letterkenny Town, attended secondary school at St Eunan’s College, reluctant learners we scraped our way through.
We parted company in September 1979; I attended Nursing School in Letterkenny and Brendan went to third level college in Limerick to study Electronic Engineering making many new friends and flat mates John Nelson, Mick Gill and Leo Cahalan, to name a few. Brendan discovered freedom, wine, woman and Guinness. After completing his studies he went to London first and later to Boston, USA. Crucially in Brendan’s life story while returning to Boston after visiting Donegal for Christmas the US Immigration Authorities at Shannon Airport refused his entry to America as his entry visa had expired. Brendan hatched a plan to gain entry to America via Canada. He eventually managed to get as far as Toronto, met Gerry Powell and Paddy Doherty, and, when introduced to Marian Buckley from Cape Town, he fell in love and the rest is history.
Thanks for the good times, always remembered by your twin John.
