Obituary of Elinor Elizabeth McKergow
ELINOR ELIZABETH McKERGOW (nee Mills)
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, played her last hand peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. She will be sorely missed by Peter, her husband of 50 years; as well as by her children, Brock (Barb), Mary Lynne (Andy); her grandchildren, Chloe, Owen and Reid; her sister, Cathie (Allan); brother-in-law, John (Karen); and her nieces, Jodi, Tracey, Kristin, Caley and Kate.
Born in Toronto, September 29, 1943 to Gordon and Isabel Mills, and raised in Montreal, QC. She graduated from Montreal General School of Nursing and travelled Europe before a chance meeting at The Inn in 1966 where she met Peter on his birthday. They were married in 1968 and relocated to Toronto with their young family in 1978.
Elinor enjoyed the friendship of many. She was always a welcoming hostess, reveling in time spent with family, friends and often her children’s friends. She also took great pleasure in the many relationships she made through extensive travels, winters spent in Sarasota, FL and summers in Goose Rocks Beach, ME.
She was an accomplished skier, golfer, duplicate bridge player, lover of scrabble, cribbage and crosswords. Elinor was a 6 letter word for beloved.
While family and friends were always her priority, Elinor eagerly found time for volunteering and giving back – Sick Kids, The Distress Center, Junior League and The Toronto Hunt Club.
Elinor’s 14-year battle was fought with dignity and grace. She was fearless, optimistic and persistent in her attitude to overcome this. Elinor lived by the words; “life is about living. Don’t worry about the things you can’t change.”
Elinor’s family would like to thank the Multiple Myeloma team at Princess Margaret Hospital, notably Dr. Suzanne Trudel and Suzanne Rowland as well as the palliative care team at Bridgepoint Hospital.
A private funeral will be held. A celebration of Elinor’s life will take place on Thursday, December 6th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at The Toronto Hunt Club, 1355 Kingston Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation for Multiple Myeloma research fund at 416-946-6560 x 1 or www.thepmcf.ca/Home Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
