I knew Joan Millward as a teacher of my daughter at Parkdale Jr & Sr PS. She made sure her students were well rounded in the education. I remember my daughter saying often that Ms Millward was tough, but in later years she was happy she had Joan as a teacher. It served her well in her business life.
I also knew Joan Millward as a friend and colleague as I also worked at Parkdale. I was a Ed Assistant and a library assistan. Joan was always cheerful and when she left she was missed by all.
Rest In Peace Joan MIllward

For Joan's friends and family: Joan was one of my mother's oldest friends, from Normal School in North Bay in the very early 40s, perhaps 1941 or 42. Her name was often heard in our house in Thunder Bay when I was young and I have seen pictures of the two of them together. There was a third young lady-teacher-friend whose name I have forgotten. Ironically, my mother (Phyllis Brown, then Hunt) is also suffering dementia and is now in long term care. She too had a long and successful teaching career in Thunder Bay (Fort William). RIP, Joan.

I had the pleasure to have had her for a teacher for 3 years at Parkdale. She was strict but fair and we all could tell that she was sincere and wanted us all to succeed. My years with her were some of the most cherished memories from my childhood. I will always remember her.

Mrs, Millward was one of those teachers you wanted to have and I was lucky to have her as my grade 5/6 teacher. She was an innovative teacher, always looking for new ways to engage students. In her grade 5/6 class we actually rotated to different subjects within the classroom. It was unheard of at that time. I remember a lot of what I learned in those two years, especially the impressionist painters like Monet, Manet, and Renoir, to name a few.
She was an amazing teacher that made learning fun and always interesting which is why I strive to be a lifelong learner.
Thank you Mrs. Millward. R.I.P. ❤️
