Obituary of Rev. Roy Donald Bennett
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Roy Bennett in Toronto on Sunday July 8, 2018. Loving husband of Diana. Beloved father of Elizabeth (Nicky), Stephanie (Charles) and Richard (d. 1979). Adored grandfather of Oisín, Chloë, Émelie, Isaac & Charlie. Roy was a much loved brother to Mary Wheeler (Geoff) and uncle and cousin to many.
Roy was born in Worcester, UK in 1940. He enjoyed a successful career in the construction industry with a sharp change in direction in 1980 when he was ordained into the Church of England and began a long and fulfilling career serving others. After 13 years working in various parishes in Warwickshire Roy became a hospital chaplain and worked tirelessly helping those in times of crisis at Nottingham University Hospital and Bassetlaw Hospital, Worksop, until his retirement in 2002. Roy’s warmth, openness and generosity of spirit endeared him to everyone he met. Roy loved life, was endlessly curious and always ready for the next adventure. In 2014 Roy and Diana immigrated to Toronto to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. In 4 short years he became a fixture in his community, making new friends of neighbours and the congregation at Northlea United Church. He will be greatly missed on both sides of the Atlantic.
A celebration of Roy’s life will be held in NORTHLEA UNITED CHURCH, 125 Brentcliffe Road, Toronto, on Tuesday August 14th at 2 p.m. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation.
