Obituary of Joan Scott

JOAN GILBERT SCOTT

1925 - 2018

Beloved wife of the late Henry (“Harry”) A.D. Scott; daughter of Humphrey B. Gilbert and Evelyn (Laing) Gilbert; dearest mother of Ian (Clayton), Geoffrey (Mary), Andrew (Beverley) and Louise (Don Johnstone); loved sister of Philip (deceased) (Wendy), Humphrey (R-J) and Daphne (Gilbert) Davidson (deceased) (William, deceased); dear grandmother of Callaway (Chris), Harry (Jessica), Susannah (John), Amanda (Andrew), Rob (Jenn), Erin (Lucas), James, Jeff (Shannon), Chris (Linda) and Joan; and great-grandmother of 17, died quietly at her home of the last 7 years, Wellesley Central Place, in Toronto on Sunday, July 15, 2018.  The family is very grateful for the loving care she received at WCP.

Joan’s dream of a career on the stage was interrupted by WWII.  She enlisted in the RCAF (Women’s Division) and served in Nova Scotia.  Harry, serving in the RCN corvette service on the North Atlantic run, managed to see her occasionally – usually in New York.  They married in 1946 and lived happily together in Toronto, Guelph, and Niagara Falls before moving back to Toronto’s new community of Don Mills, where they raised their family.  Later they moved to Ottawa and finally to the Kingston area in retirement.

Through all the years of different principal residences, summers in Gananoque among the extended family were a constant.

Joan was a life-long learner (piano, French, bridge) and teacher (knitting at Dixon Hall, YMCA Driver Education, art docent for the National Gallery in Ottawa, bridge).

Her infectious good humour and generosity of spirit to friends and strangers alike endeared her to everyone, and resulted in large circles of friends wherever she and Harry lived.

There will be a Celebration of Life at Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue, (south of Davisville Avenue), Toronto on Tuesday, July 31st at 1:00 pm.
