Joe - was my big brother and the reason that I came to Canada 40 years ago.
Joe was my mentor , you can read many books and listen to many teachers , from joe I learned so much more , was my buisness partner for almost all my life , hard to put in to a few sentences how much I will miss him , from what book I should read to what strategy is best and how to succeed always count to 10 take a piece of paper on one side the plus on the orher a minus , focus on the facts eliminate the emotions, focus on the end goal , make an informed decision , to Kate Zoe Sarah and Josephine a really remarkable man has passed as you know well.
I will always have his sprit with me as will all of his friends.
I took so much comfort from so many of his friends in thier stories ,and joe had many ,his celebration last Tuesday and at the funeral home , and the comments posted here ,all reflect that we have lost a wonderful man not just the guy on court 8 hamming it for the audience, but for his family as well , truly a show mans showman
Sleep well till we meet again.

I would like to take up Stephen's call for sharing memories of Joseph. I was hired by Mr Murphy in 1987 and worked for Murphy's Snack Foods/Potato Chips for the next 3.5 years. Joseph was very proud of the fact that he had an MBA working for him. For me, it was a great learning experience and a fun place to work. I have many lasting memories of my time there and was treated very well. As was mentioned at his celebration of life, Joseph had a relatively short attention span and on one occasion when I attempted to get some clarification on the "grand project" he had assigned me, I was given the following - "Tim, don't bother me with the labour pains, just show me the baby". In addition, he would regularly tell me that I would make a perfect Irishman if I was just a little more irresponsible, which I took both as a huge compliment and wise advice that I have since tried to apply. Thanks for the memories Joseph and Joe.

When I was a young teen, uncle Joseph gave me his business card, and told me with utmost seriousness (as I remember it) that if I ever wanted to run away I should be his first point of call. I kept that business card for years. It was the first serious conversation I remember having with an adult other than my parents.
Whilst I never did run away to Canada, I did escape to the Murphy’s several times. There was the summer I had a car crash in Ireland, and uncle Joseph invited me to stay to make up for the dreadful start to the holidays. Or the summer, I worked in Toronto and Josephine and Joseph looked after me. Or the time Joseph, lent me and my friend Paula his Saab convertible...we weren’t exactly experienced drivers, we couldn’t believe our luck! I also fondly remember the diners out in London with Sarah, friends and the unsolicited boyfriend advice! I have so many fond memories of holidays, Christmases and diners with uncle Joseph, Josephine and Sarah. They are true family.
I love you all - and miss you. Wish I could be with you today.
Love from Perth - Susie

Joseph was one of my favorite practice partners as a teen at the Lawn...some 34 years ago....he gave me some valuable life advice and we had some brawling battles on the court which I loved. Later he practiced with my son and they may or may not have won the infamous Men's B doubles title on court 8. I ran into him a few times over the past 10 years and he always had a huge smile and hug.....I'll miss catching up with him. My sister and I were big lovers of the wine he was recommending in recent years....sending lots of love to his family!

I have known Joseph since I was 10 years old, when Sarah and I became close friends in 5th grade at Branksome in 1985. I'm sure that Sarah does not have a friend who does not have a vivid memory of Joseph, he swept us all into the Murphy orbit with generosity and enthusiasm. Dinners at Grano's, trips to the ice cream parlour and even family vacations, Sarah's parents included us in so many adventures. They opened their home, their garden and even their wine cellar to us. Who opens their wine cellar to a bunch of 18 year olds? Joseph.
When the teenage wine drinking, laughing and chatting in the garden at Glenrose inevitably became too loud and the neighbours complained, Joseph did none of the standard parent moves. He did not tell us to keep it down. He did not tell us to bring it inside. Instead he turned to the neighbour and said "Oh, come on, Frank, let them have fun. Don't you remember what it's like to be young?"
Joseph always remembered what it's like to be young, and his sudden loss feels impossible. My heart goes out to all of the Murphy family. May the many moments of joy he brought give you strength now.

Joe Murphy was one of my Dad’s best friends and a guy who made a special effort to show great kindness to myself, brother and sister after he passed. For players of a certain level, one of the great goals one can have is to win the Men’s B tourney...it’s likely as competitive event that the Club has. Joe was never hesitant to remind me and anyone within earshot that he had won it no less then 7 times (maybe an exaggeration but it could easily be 10 with his famed forehand)
Several years ago the stars aligned and the right players didn’t play and I was to able to win what unofficially is Joe Murphys trophy. An hour before the final I ran into Joe and told him who I was playing and asked if he wouldn’t mind warming me up. He hit with me for 20 minutes, working my suspect backhand and instilling me with advice and confidence that, without question, allowed me to play one of the best matches I’ve ever played and win.

Joe has marked my life and that of some many people. I have known him for 19 years . During those years, I was, like all, the beneficiary of his affection, generosity, humour and positive energy. He was a handsome, debonnaire gentlemen, with magnificient silver hair floating in the wind. He would call my name like nobody else did and always share with me his latest joy whether it was the last book he read, the latest swim with Zoe or the dinner Kate prepared the night before ( with the accompanying cleaning he was most happy to take care of). His loss leaves a big hole in the fabric of the TLTC and our collective soul. He will be forever missed. Thank you Joe, I salute you my friend!

Your charisma, generous and welcoming spirit, boundless energy and zest for life leaves a gaping hole in so many lives. You were the heartbeat of the club. I think we’ve played a 1000 sets of tennis since I was 12 years old and so many dinners with families in tow...it was such an honor to play the Irish open and stay at Yvonne’s beautiful home.
I love that we played match-maker with your uncle and my mom and joked that we were now related...I miss you, Joe. The club and Toronto will never be the same for me without hearing your Irish lilt and seeing your smiling face. My heart aches- you left the party too soon- and boy did you love a party! Dearest Joseph,
I have known you forever, since I was 16 and we started hanging out together
in Dublin.
You were full of life and mischief at an early age, charm too became your ally and you used it to full effect.
You were generous to a fault, kind beyond words and always pushing the boundaries.
You loved life and the people in it and always looked for the best in everyone.
You even bribed the nuns in my last year of school with bunches of daffodils if they would let me out early to join you for tea. Your charm worked even on them.
I will miss all the things we shared, our memories, the Queens in Dalkey, the intense conversations we had about food and business, the holidays we had in Georgian Bay with Josephine & Alina and all our kids, the times we spent in Spain with family and friends, the walks on Brittas Bay beach (your irish office)
and the wonderful smell of cigars which you introduced my husband to but most of all Joseph I will miss you.
My deepest love and sympathy to your wife Kate, your beautiful daughters Sarah and Zoe and to your extended family & friends.
Rest in Peace,
Love Eileen

Joseph, you left us way too soon and there was so much more of life to live and you leave behind a huge void in all our lives. Joseph had many loves - at the top of the list of course there was Kate - the love of his life and his dear "Zozo" of whom he was so proud. Joseph would never miss a piano recital, dance or drama production where Zoe was performing.
The other half of his life was tennis - the Club, his numerous tennis colleagues and of course the friendly Toronto Lawn staff who looked after his whims! Joseph was the most competitive person and over the years has collected numerous trophies and participated in so much of the life of the Club. Ironically but maybe befitting, this is where his life would end.
We live just above the tennis courts and could always tell from the grunts emanating from Court 8 when Joseph was playing. He would often look up to see if we were watching and would make a point of putting up the score, especially if he or his partner were winning.
We would also see Joseph at the crack of dawn ploughing up and down the pool in order to build up his number of laps - although he conceded that there were swimmers ahead that he would not be able to overtake.
Another of his loves was his garden in summer. Joseph told us recently that his favourite time of the day was sitting on the deck with his morning paper and coffee and looking down his garden, enjoying and savouring the peace of the early morning hours.
Joseph was no handyman or Mr Fixit but he was full of enthusiasm and praise for others efforts, possibly because Joseph had problems even changing a lightbulb and was always most appreciative of such talents.
Joseph had an unforgettable presence, charisma and outgoing character. Everyone seemed to know Joseph around the neighbourhood and many people will remember how Joseph had touched their lives. He will be sorely missed by all of his many friends but especially by his Kate and Zoe and the immediate family. Rest in peace Joseph.

I first met Cousin Joseph 37 years ago in his parent’s house in Dublin when he enthusiastically offered to help me emigrate to Canada. He gave me my first job when I got here, on the production line in his chip factory in the old Loblaws building on Bathurst Street. At the end of my first the day I was covered in chip grease, but he still drove me home in his trademark SAAB.
At different family events over the years Joseph always made an entrance, he had charisma, like a movie Star at Cannes, you almost expected to see the paparazzi following. His optimism was contagious, his stories were movie material and his kindness legendary. I last saw him a few months ago on Yonge Street as he was walking home. I told him I was tired after a 60 min walk. Joseph, 10 years older than me, explained that he had swam for an hour that morning, and his 30 min walk up Yonge was a warm up for the 2 hours of tennis he was going to play that evening. I took a cab home after hearing all that.
Joseph flew his flag high up on every mountain he climbed and when he got there he made sure everyone knew he had arrived. To some his accomplishments were overpowering but to others, and I think this was his secret, Joseph saw his flag on that mountain as a beacon of encouragement, friendship and kindness.

Please accept my deepest condolences on Joe's passing. He was a dedicated husband and father, a super guy, and a great tennis player and competitor. The heart and soul of Toronto Lawn. May his memory be a blessing.!

From my earliest days I heard about my amazing, handsome, tennis star cousin Joseph in Ireland. He came to check out Canada in the early 70’s and shared my room. I was overwhelmed by his strength and coordination (he could hop from one hand to the other), his competitiveness (“OK, let’s make best it of 15” at ping pong), his speed at showering (be ready in two minutes from deep sleep), but mostly his unquenchable zest for life. Irish to the core, in common with my departed mother his dearest Auntie Pat, he never let facts get in the way of a good story.
But aside from his athletic and verbal talents, he was an unreservedly warm and good person. I never heard him utter a bad word of anyone. He handled anything life threw at him with grace, courage, humour and especially energy - he was so hard working. He was beyond generous to a fault and did whatever he could for anyone. Lastly, he was a spiritual Catholic and I take comfort knowing he was always ready. He will be painfully missed by all who knew him. My deepest and most sincere condolences to Kate, Zoe and Sarah and all his family.

It is hard to put into words the shock and tears we all feel following the passing of our dear, lovable, generous, funny, loyal, handsome, resourceful and forever friend and distant cousin, Joseph. Over the years we discussed the world, classical music, tennis, the Lawn, friends, jobs, business and the good and sometimes not-so-good breaks that came our way and Joseph always managed to put a positive spin on the day and the times we lived in. He quietly helped those who needed it and was always there for an opinion, insight or “I think I might know someone”. Joseph, you were a wonderful man, a great father to Sarah and Zoe and loving husband to Kate and we will sorely miss you.......forever down the years!☘️
Much, much love - Gerald, Ladka, Simone and Danielle Sweeney
