Obituary of Shirley Grace Barrie

SHIRLEY BARRIE

September 30, 1945 – April 15, 2018

The final curtain has fallen for our beloved wife, mum, grandma, sister, aunt and friend.  After a valiant six-year fight, our precious Shirley Grace Barrie passed away peacefully on Sunday at Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto.

Shirley is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Ken Chubb; her adored children Alexis Chubb, Robin Chubb and Yiwen Zhu, and the ‘light of her life,’ grandson Tristan Chubb.  Best ever big sister to Marlene and Reg Egilsson (Woodstock), Sylvia and Larry Sales (Woodstock), and Elisabeth Barrie and John Wilkin (London).  Lovingly remembered by Pat Armstrong (Burlington), David and Marlene Chubb (St. Catharines), and the extended Barrie and Chubb families.

Shirley was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario and was predeceased by her parents George Barrie Jr. (1968), Harvey Armstrong (1998) and Marjorie Barrie Armstrong (2014).  She was a graduate of both Western University, London and Carleton University, Ottawa.

Shirley was a highly respected Playwright, Scriptwriter and Producer in both England and Canada.  Throughout her career, she received numerous awards and honours, the most recent being the Playwrights Guild of Canada’s Lifetime Membership Award.  In Shirley’s own words “I mine history for golden nuggets that shine today, and am particularly attracted to stories of women who refuse to play by the rules.”  Her stories about unconventional women, written by an unconventional woman, will live on forever……

A private family service was held on Thursday, April 19th with arrangements under the direction of the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue.  Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

If desired, contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation (Lung Cancer or Brain Cancer Research Funds) or a cancer charity of your choice.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at the ALUMNAE THEATRE, 70 Berkeley Street on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.  This will be an opportunity for all who knew and loved her to enjoy excerpts from her life’s work, reminisce, share special memories, and raise a glass to a truly outstanding woman who brought such joy to our lives.
