Obituary of Joyce Rice

JOYCE (JO) RICE

November 1, 1928 – January 25, 2018

As a child Jo lived in sight of Windsor Castle where her mother often took her to watch the Royals and their retinue or hear the guard’s band.

Later in 1947, she attended Brighton College for Teachers and received her certification from Reading University.

In England, her first classroom looked over the sea at the western end of the White Cliffs where they begin to disappear into the beach at Brighton.

While in Brighton, she married Martyn, then with him sailed on the Empress of Britain in 1959 and became a landed immigrant in the port of Quebec City.

She was happy that although her own clan had been left behind in England she acquired a new one in the McTavish family - Duncan and Victoria and their children Glen, Ross, Beth and Cameron.

In her teaching life, her talents worked best at the point where pupils become students, preparing their move from junior to senior school.

Survived by her husband Martyn, brother-in-law Geoffrey, niece Philippa and her husband Richard, and great-nephews William and James in England.  We all miss Jo and hope that wherever she is, she is content.

We will remember Jo at a reception at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Sunday, April 29th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
