Obituary of Carol Diane Martin

CAROL DIANE MARTIN, ART, BASc., FCSMLS(D)

(NEE SIMPSON)

July 26, 1943 – March 14, 2018

Carol passed peacefully at the age of 74 on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, in Toronto.

The daughter of the late Hazel and Ivan Simpson of St. Thomas ON, Carol is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Glenn; her children, David (Susan) of Thunder Bay ON, Cindy of Vancouver BC; her grandchildren Breanne, Bradley, Nicole and Jack; and her sister Nancy (Richard) of Brampton ON.  She will be missed by her many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Carol was a strong believer in higher education.  She earned certification as a Registered Technologist in 1964 and Advanced Registered Technologist in Hematology in 1982.  Carol was a senior technologist in Hematology and Coagulation at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.  In the early 1980’s she joined The Michener Institute as an instructor.

In 1999, Carol became the first in Canada to earn the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science, Medical and Applied Biotechnology from Charles Sturt University in Australia.  In 2001, she was given specific recognition and distinction in her field when she was awarded the Distinguished Fellowship Award by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science.  Her citation stated, “As an educator, practitioner and a volunteer, Carol has made significant contributions to the field of medical laboratory science.”

Carol enjoyed a robust retirement of global travel with Glenn, where they enjoyed learning about different countries and cultures, as well as sampling great food and wine.  She kept a very close relationship with David and family in Thunder Bay, and Cindy and family in Vancouver, by travelling several times a year to visit.  Carol’s grandchildren all have cherished memories of learning how to bake delicious treats and receiving care packages of cookies from “Grandma Martin”.

Although extremely accomplished in her professional life, Carol’s warmth and understated manner are the traits for which she’ll be remembered.  Her family will remember her kindness, patience and compassionate, loving demeanor always.

The family wishes to thank the nursing team at Sunnybrook Palliative Care for the kindness, warmth and respect they showed Carol in her final days.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Sunnybrook Foundation Palliative Care in Carol’s name.

The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 19th followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m.  Reception to follow.  As this is a celebration of Carol’s life, not her passing, the family encourages a more relaxed atmosphere without suits and ties.  Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
