Obituary of Donald Edward Barton
DONALD EDWARD BARTON
March 10, 1935 – March 9, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Donald (Don) Edward Barton. He passed away peacefully, in the arms of his family, on Friday, March 9, 2018, just a day before his 83rd birthday. Beloved husband to Joan, the love of his life for 60 years. Loving father of Cheryl, Nancy (Dean Martin) and Lisa (Paul Hickey) and beloved grandfather of Quinlan, Will, Evan, Tim, and Sara. He will be lovingly remembered by his remaining siblings, Roger and Joan, large extended family and many friends.
Don was born in Toronto on March 10, 1935 to Edward and Agnes Barton, the fourth of five children and eldest boy. Don was a lifelong sportsman who played football for De La Salle College and for the University of Western Mustangs. He later took up squash and golf and was a long-time member of the Toronto Cricket Club and Meadowbrook Golf Club.
Don had a 35-year successful career with the Canada Life Assurance Company, working in Toronto with brief stints in Winnipeg and Atlanta. With his vibrant generous spirit and hearty laugh, former co-workers, friends and family will fondly remember Don and his story telling.
Don’s sharp sense of humour and optimism lasted through his life, despite his declining mental and physical health in his later years. We are so thankful for the caregivers who assisted him with kindness and dignity, allowing him to remain at home with Joan until the end of his life.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21st. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 22nd in Blessed Sacrament Church, 24 Cheritan Avenue, (Yonge Street south of Lawrence). Reception to follow.
In memoriam donations may be made to Hill House Hospice, www.hillhousehospice.com or to the Concussion Legacy Foundation, www.concussionfoundation.org/about/Canada. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
