Obituary of Frederick Smith

FREDERICK SMITH

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at age 94 after a slow decline of about a decade with Parkinson’s.  Fred was born in Kent County, New Brunswick on Boxing Day, 1923.  He grew up on a farm and after being in the Dental Corps during WWII, moved to Toronto in 1946 to begin his career as a dental technician.

Fred was devoted to his wife of over 61 years, Mary Jane, and is also survived by his son Howard, daughter Heather, son in law John Waldow and granddaughter Alice, as well as his remaining sibling Bertha Cyr and other relatives in New Brunswick and Ontario.

Fred was a wonderful husband, father and friend.  Gentle, caring and innately honest, he had a sense of humour that many appreciated.  Fred especially enjoyed growing and sharing fruit and vegetables from his backyard garden, fishing, tennis, curling and bridge.  An annual five days or so fishing trip into Algonquin Park was for many years a treasured part of his life, as was the many hours he spent fishing in the Nottawasaga river during his earlier retirement years.  Fred was a registered dental technician and a licensed dental therapist.  He owned and operated his dental laboratory for well over 20 years before retiring in 1989.

Fred will always be loved and missed by us all.

A brief service will be held in Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Monday, March 5th at 3:00 p.m.  If desired, donations may be made to Parkinson Canada, 4211 Yonge Street, Suite 316, Toronto, ON M2P 2A9.
