I have had the pleasure of knowing Juan my entire life and have become a better person because of him. He was there when I was born to give me my first stuffed animal. He was best friends with my late father, Rolando Luján, and nothing was more fun than being in the same room as them. Juan always inspired me to seek happiness, travel often, learn as many languages as one can and to fill life with humour. I will remember him always laughing loudly with my dad... cooking amazing meals... listening to opera... and dancing in the kitchen. I will carry his shining memory with me forever. Love, Annie.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Juan's passing from a mutual friend.I knew him for may years, both from when I worked as an immigration officer, at
the Air Canada terminal when he was a flight attendant and later in life working at the IRB.I remember talking to him in the hearings while he was doing Cryptic crossword puzzles and we would talk about his trips to New York or in Toronto where he would go to see opera, theater or the National Ballet. We lived in the same neighborhood and would talk periodically after I retired and he was keeping busy with the Board and courts as an interpreter, who was always in demand. My deepest condolences to your family and friends.

Juan was a dear friend and colleague. We had lunch the week before his transition to another time and space. Our colleague Brian Levene joined us. That morning Juan had given $60 to a woman who had just been released from jail so she could get back to her shelter to pick her belongings and have some extra to eat.
Even though Brian and I insisted on paying for his lunch since he had already paid for someone's food he would have none of it. Thanks Juan. Hasta siempre hermano!

Enjoyed Juan so much... the impish grin with which he'd follow up a joke, the chocolate bars that fell to the table after his meals, his cologne (!), and he always looked like a million dollars. He was an accomplished interpreter, a perfectionist, one of the best I ever worked with. He excelled at English-language cryptic-crosswords, could keep one going all day at the Refugee Board, generously accepting contributions to its completion. He appreciated others, and loved wit and repartee, grace and intelligence. We once had a sunset dinner on a private roof-top terrace that overlooked Sacre-Coeur in Montmartre - "une belle tranche de jambon", spanish tomatoes, and a bottle of wine from the plane... Juan was exceptional. A liver of life.

Juan entertained us for hours with anecdotes from his years attending to people on aeroplanes. We'll never forget the evening or him. Though we've not seen him since and never expected to, we're still very sad to hear that he has left us all. He should rest in peace knowing that he made other peoples' lives better.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Juan.
I knewhim as a fellow flight attendant at Air Canada.
We had many good and crazy times together as we were quite close in seniority.
I also used to see him socially as we both lived quite close downtown and knew a lot of the same people.
But life goes on and it is very sad we did not keep in touch especially after he retired from AC.
He was wonderful, funny person and I always loved his sense of humour. He would always bring a smile to my face.
My thoughts are with you at this diffcult time.

Hello everyone,
It is with tears in my eyes that I write this modest tribute to Juan Rodriguez.
As a former interpreter at the Immigration and Refugee Board, I have nothing but fond memories of Juan. In my humble opinion, he was the best Spanish interpreter there at the time, and it is no wonder that, when the IRB interpreters decided to create IMINTERA, an organization to promote their profession and defend their rights, Juan was chosen as their president, a position he held until he sadly passed away in that horrific accident.
I still remember our last conversation, in which he poured his heart out to me for an hour about the need to improve the interpreters' wages and job security. May his death give us renewed strength to continue pushing for the professionalization of community interpreting, a goal that was so dear to him.
Juan's skills and experience made him an excellent interpreter. His professionalism and passion for his job made him a leader to follow. His personal charm and sense of humor made him a great guy to hang out with. He will be sorely missed.

A week ago the interpreting community lost a respected colleague and a dear friend. While most people knew Juan as an experienced interpreter, I was fortunate enough to share Juan’s passion for music, ballet and opera. He had a deep understanding for the beauty of human voice and fluidity of movement on stage. He was a longtime subscriber to the Canadian Opera Company and National Ballet of Canada and used to have a front row seat and joked that he would only give it up when he is gone. I am not sure how many operas and ballets he has seen, but he never missed a chance to see a great production in New York or Europe. I will miss sitting next to him during the ballet performance, looking at the program and then taking it all in, so we can have these really deep discussions during the intermission. A couple of weeks ago we were dreaming of going to Russia to see the Bolshoi and when I get there one day, my friend Juan would be there too, because he will always have a special place in my heart.
My condolences go to his family, his dear sister Elisa who he loved very much and deeply cared for.
