GARDNER, Douglas Girdwood

Died peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, age 89. Douglas was highly regarded and influential in the field of social work in Toronto. He was an avid supporter of the arts, particularly Roy Thomson Hall, where he served as a guide after retiring. He also was a docent for many years at the Gardiner Museum. He was the son of the late Stanley and Marion (nee Girdwood) Gardner of Sudbury, Ontario. Predeceased by his partner of 44 years Ross H. Lumsden, and by his two brothers Kenneth and John. Douglas will be greatly missed by his sister-in-law Marie Gardner, nephews Ross (Susan), Scott (Elin), Neil (Donna), niece Elizabeth (Terry), and cousin Susan (Ted). Special thanks to dear friends Wendy and Christine for all their compassionate care.
There will be a celebration of Douglas’s life on Tuesday, October 24th from 3:00 -5:00 p.m. at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue). If desired, donations may be made in Douglas’s name to the Canadian Cancer Society.
