On behalf of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, I want to express our condolences to Douglas' extended family. We only heard about his passing this morning, and therefore were not able to attend the memorial service. Douglas was a passionate supporter of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, having attended performances since he was a boy. As a musician himself, he knew what went into the rehearsal and performance process, and would never leave a TMC concert until he had waxed enthusiastic to both myself and Noel Edison, our conductor. Doulgas was a true gentlemen, always a dapper dresser, warm hearted and generous. We, at the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and personally, my husband and I miss miss him greatly.

We feel so blessed to have known Douglas for all the years that he was a spirited member of our shared Leaside United Church family. He shall be greatly missed by us and by all who knew him at LUC. Douglas was always so positive and encouraging with everyone. He had such a genuine caring nature. We especially appreciated his steadfast support for our leadership and the church's extensive outreach work which included refugee sponsorships, Eastminster Out-of-the-Cold programme, and many others.
To see him on Sundays sitting beside his dear friend, Bette Scott, shall always be an inspiring visual memory that we shall treasure.
Thank you, Douglas, for your life, your work, your heart and your spirit!!!
Hugs,
Bob and Lis

Douglas brought light and joy to all who knew him, and never failed to make each and everyone of us feel uniquely special! What a gift he possessed and what a gift he showered upon us! I had the immense pleasure of sharing his life through the Arts, and know that he will be widely and greatly missed by all those involved at Roy Thompson Hall, Massey Hall, The Gardiner Museum, the Mendelsohn Choir, the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet Company, plus many more! A man of grace, elegance, and amazing knowledge spanning years of events, architecture and history! He never stopped teaching, listening, loving and giving right to the very end! Love you, Douglas, my dear, dear friend! Be at peace! Wendy

Doug was my much valued classmate at Emmanuel College class of ‘53,and a dear friend ever since,. Such a gracious, positive, and friendly spirit! - never a discouraging word (or a discouraged one either!) Doug’s ministry lay in social work, but his whole life embodied the Best heart of the United Church of Canada which he loved. He was God ‘s good man,and blessed so manny - including me. Thank you, Doug. We love you always!

A life well lived. Doug was one of the most genuinely decent and warm-hearted people you could ever hope to know. I am deeply saddened at his passing, but more than that I am grateful that he was part of my life. Sleep well, my friend.

I grew up on Pine St., Sudbury, and Gardners Garage was right behind our house. My father, grandfather aunt and uncle never did business with anyone else .
In addition, The Gardner family sat in the pew behind us at St. Andrews United Church on Larch St. and , in those days, families always sat in the same pew.
John Gardner was my age, and we were at Victoria College, U of T at the same time. I always admired his two older brothers. Ken came back to Sudbury to teach at the High School, and Douglas , who took lessons from the same teacher I did: Katherine Sissons Kilpatrick , was one of the best piano players in Sudbury.
The Gardners were a wonderful Sudbury family, and " The Gardner Boys" carried on the tradition.

Douglas will be fondly remembered by his cousins in the White family. A beautiful man with a big heart and warm smile. Douglas had the ability to make all that met him feel at ease.
A wonderful story teller but also a good listener. I thank Douglas for relating the family stories to me about my father Bill White, his oldest cousin. Douglas was always the keeper of the family history and I will greatly miss learning from him. Douglas would light up a room simply by walking into it. A true and good heart bringing much love, joy and light to this world. He will be truly missed.
