Addison Khan - Criminal Registrar Superior Court of Justice posted a condolence

27 Years ago began my career at the Ministry of the Attorney General. Mr. Justice H. Locke was one of the first judges I had the privilege of working with in many a criminal trial. I am struck by his ability to make you feel as if you belonged. Amongst allot of pleasant memories, one stood out from the rest. We were doing a jury trial and just before we were going out to take the verdict, he noticed my dicky was a little dirty. I said to His Honour, I'll go get another one in my locker,, he said Addy, don't worry about it. He reached down into his desk and pulled me out one of his. I wore it that day, he said keep it as a memento. Never once did I feel inferior or out of place in his presence. He always made me feel as if I belonged in court. Thanks and I'll miss your true humanity.

To the family and many friends of the Honourable Justice Mr. Hugh Locke:
My deepest condolences on the passing of Justice Locke. I owe him an enormous debt of gratitude. His wisdom, compassion and sense of fairness were instrumental in allowing me to recover from a series of decisions that I made, that while made with good intentions, were extremely poor in judgement. The extenuating circumstances that were part of my story I believe provided him with the grounds to see through the specific details to the intent that motivated me. His judgement allowed me to continue my military career, a career which included operational tours to Bosnia and to Afghanistan in the service of Canada. My military career culminated in my investiture by the Governor General into the Order of Military Merit for outstanding meritorious service. My only regret is that I was not able to personally thank him, and through the results of my career, demonstrate to him that his faith in me was well founded. I am sure my story is one of many similar stories in terms of the positive impact Justice Locke had on those who pass through his Courtroom, however for me, my interaction with him was life altering. I cannot thank him enough. I also mention this so you are aware that there are many who deeply impacted by this wonderful man. We are all sadden by his passing.
Sincerely,
Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Roy Armstrong, OMM CD

Dear Dallas and family
The passing of such a wonderful man- so respected by his colleagues on the Court, but mostly loved.
He was such fun to be around, and always present with his humorous, kind eyes and solid advice. He loved to laugh. A tradition began and ended in our Court when Justices Humphrey and Locke shared an office as supernumerary judges. I am not sure how much work was done, but they sure had fun. I was privileged to be just down the hall from them. They had their special cabinet with abundant scotch for a little evening tipple and a story.
A toast to a gentleman, and to a life well lived. Best Janet

Justice Locke was a fair jurist who was admired by many in the justice community. In my former life as an offender, he heard a bail review in my case. While I didn't get the result I wanted at the time, I remember feeling I'd been treated with kindness by him from the bench which was more than I expected. In a strange twist of fate, I was later represented by his son David who was his father's son in the practice of law. Now 25 years later as a newish lawyer I think of Justice Locke as an example of how to conduct oneself with integrity fairness and kindness. Sincere condolences to his family. May his memory be a blessing to you all during this sad time.

Debbie and I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to all members of the Locke family.
Justice Locke was an incredibly accomplished individual and will be sorely missed by his family and all in the legal profession.
I fondly remember however his love of a good joke and his cutting wit that could keep all of Dave's friends on their toes!
We are sincerely sorry for your loss and will be thinking of you all.
Sincerely,
Bob and Debbie Hudson

My deepest sympathies at the passing of your dad. I had the pleasure of working with him at the County and then District Courts for 10 years, and then seeing him from time to time at the CLA conferences. He was such an upright, fair and decent human being. As a judge, he was my favourite to work with. When I recall my time as a reporter in the 80s, it is Judge Locke that is always included in those memories. May he Rest In Peace and in your hearts always.
