I had the pleasure of knowing Andy. I worked with him at Air Canada in Toronto from '87 until '91. I was shocked & deeply saddened to hear of his battle & subsequent passing.
With his infectious smile & personality, he was impossible not to like right away. His amazing sense of humor & love for life & good times was always evident. We always had a blast. On several occasions we would spend hours staying up into the wee hours listening to & discussing music, dissecting songs & analyzing drum parts.
Andy was an unbelievable drummer, and he was one of my main influences & inspirations for becoming a drum fanatic myself. One of the best stories of my life is an Andy Moffat drum story:
We were at a massive pig roast festival somewhere in rural Ontario, and there was a stage there with a full band set up including a drum kit. So eventually Andy gets up onto the stage, grabs a mic, and asks the crowd for some guitarists to join him. Nobody steps up, but that does not deter Andy Moffat. I thought he would just not bother playing, but that's not what happened. What happened next was one of the greatest performances I have ever witnessed. He got up there and played a set of songs on the drum kit, flawlessly, all by himself on stage, while singing lyrics AND guitar parts with his voice. Legendary. He had the skills of a professional drummer. It was an epic performance, the likes of which I haven't seen since.
Fast forward about 23 years.
I moved to Vancouver in '92 & had lost touch with Andy, but I found out from another Vancouver/former Toronto AC Lead, that he had transferred to Vancouver. Then one day, a couple years ago in my current job as a transit bus driver, I noticed a familiar face walk onto my bus. I wasn't sure it was him until I saw that unmistakable smile. He rode my bus home a few times a week after his shift, & we'd spend the entire 25 minute trip reminiscing about the past, laughing out loud all the way. It was like only a couple years had passed, not 20. He was still the same happy, fun loving guy he always was, & he still loved playing his "tubs" as much as ever.
To the Moffattt family, thank you for allowing us to use this platform to express our thoughts & tributes. Please accept my sincerest and heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort & healing as you go through this difficult transition.
Andy was a unique, one of a kind, unforgettable person. May he Rest In Peace.
