Captain Robert Angus and Janet Anne MacKinnon

Obituary of Captain Robert Angus and Janet Anne MacKinnon

It is with an emptying sadness and hearts full of love we announce the passing of our mother and father after brief illnesses.  Dad passed away on Sunday, May 7 followed by Mom on Saturday, May 27, 2017.  Loving parents to Peter (Penny), Scott (Pam Carnell) and Katie (Steve Wright) and grandparents to Cameron, Angus, Kaleigh and Deacon.  They were both surrounded by the love of their family in their final days.

Dad joined Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada) as a pilot in 1951 at twenty, and Mom graduated from Montreal General Hospital’s nursing program in 1953 at twenty-one.  Dad went on to a forty year career with the airline, while mom became an operating room nurse at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal.  They met by chance, or maybe it was fate, and were married on May 18, 1957 in Quebec City. They were the epitome of the new Canada. The world lay at their feet.

Settling in Montreal, they raised a family but were travellers at heart, and together they explored six continents by plane and by ship over the course of their sixty years together.  We were fortunate to be included in many of their adventures and came to understand that home truly was where the heart lay and that half the fun was in getting there.

Our sincere thanks to the staff in the ER and on the 14th floor at St. Michael’s Hospital for treating Dad with dignity and respect. It was a most fitting cure to a life well lived.  We also extend our gratitude to Dr. Florescu and the staff at Michael Garron Hospital for treating Mom with kindness and making our final days with her dignified and peaceful.

A celebration of their lives will take place at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue), Toronto on Sunday, June 25th, at 3:00 p.m.  If desired, and in lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Michael’s Hospital in Dad’s name, or a donation to Michael Garron Hospital in Mom’s name would be greatly appreciated.  Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
