Obituary of James Henry Morton
It is with profound sadness that the family of James (Jim) Morton announces his passing on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 while surrounded by family at North York General Hospital.
Born on June 24, 1926 and raised in the Beaches in Toronto, Jim lived a full life starting out by being a lifeguard at Q-Beach, attending Danforth Tech and graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in Engineering, followed immediately by his MBA. Jim would later become a 33-year veteran of IBM when he decided to retire and become a consultant like all great Engineers!
The real serious events in his life though started when he met and married Margaret Morton (née Magani) on September 15, 1952.
With a ‘little help from Marg’, Jim’s “piece de resistance” was discovering the many ups and downs, hardships and joys of raising a family of four in Don Mills, Ontario.
Jim will be lovingly missed by his children: Joanne (Phil), Blair (Jutta), John, and Greg (Kathleen), and his adoring grandchildren Alex and Raif.
Jim loved people and along with that his passion for holding a great conversation. Mild in manner, dry in humor and ferocious in heart and dedication, Jim mastered it all. Family man, tennis player, canoeing and fishing on the Rouge River near the old Morton family cottage, and family trips to Lake Muskoka, back when it was cool to say and without a doubt a talented and avid gardener. He literally insisted on walking around his backyard, supported by others, to view the progress of his many plants and trees only a few short weeks before his final hours with us.
It must be said, right through to his late 80’s, Jim worked steadfastly on providing care for Jim’s dear son, John. Many nights and early mornings, Jim would be found working on his computer developing and launching plans to ensure John’s forever happiness.
And without question, the Morton family wishes to thank Amalia Emperador, Marita and Nica Dela Cruz, and the many other caregivers that helped support Jim’s independence in his final years.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 1st. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday, June 2nd at 11:00 a.m. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place after the service at the Toronto Hunt Club, 1355 Kingston Road, Scarborough, between 12:30 – 3:00 p.m.
If desired, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to Community Living Toronto, 20 Spadina Road, Toronto, Ontario M5R 2S7. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
