Obituary of Nina Cambell
CAMBELL, Nina (nee Bisko)
August 17, 1927 – April 26, 2017
Passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Predeceased by her husband George. Proud and loving mother to Kathy (Lorne) Honickman and Karen (Frank) Wetselaar. Adoring grandmother to Asher and Hanaa Honickman, Lara Honickman, Rebecca and Mike Doutre, and Daniel Wetselaar. Thrilled great-grandmother to Connor, Alice and Serah. Nina was the only child of Russian immigrants Nicholas and Frances Bisko of New Toronto, and spent a great deal of time with her extended family on Richmond Street West. After high school, she graduated from nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she made life-long friends. Through her childhood friend, Doreen Peiluck, she met the love of her life, George Cambell, whom she married in 1952. They moved to Don Mills where they enjoyed twenty-nine years of marriage. During that time Nina continued to develop life-long friendships with neighbours and friends at the Church of the Ascension, clubs, courses and volunteer work. When George passed away in 1981, Nina immersed herself in Social Work studies at Ryerson, where she once again made long-lasting friendships. In 2012 Nina moved to a condo and, though forced to give up her beautiful garden, continued to live a rich and full social life which included travel, opera, theatre, volunteer work and bible study. Despite macular degeneration, she was able to lead an independent life through the services of the CNIB and Dr. Assad. Nina was a loving, intelligent and courageous woman who followed her heart and spoke her mind. We were blessed to have such a role model in our lives. We would like to thank the many health care professionals at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the personal caregivers who ensured her comfort in her final days. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 28th. A funeral service will be held in the CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION, 33 Overland Drive, on Saturday, April 29th at 12:00 p.m. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
