John was born in Manhattan, New York to an Irish immigrant family. He was a United States Army Vietnam War veteran. After completing his military service, he moved to Toronto, Ontario and obtained his PhD from the University of Toronto. John was a professor at Centennial College for over 27 years, inspiring students with his humour, curiosity, and breadth of knowledge. A compassionate volunteer at the Out of the Cold program and volunteer visitor at Princess Margaret Hospital, he devoted his time to those in need over decades. John’s faith inspired him to become a Novice Knight of Justice of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta. His passion for history, heraldry, and genealogy was recognized by his peers and reflected in his academic scholarship and publications.
