I met John in language school in Texas. We were good friends. I knew John was sick, and prayed for him. I will never forget him. I last saw john at our last reunion in Las Vegas, too long ago.I will miss him. We had some stories together. Please know he was loved by all of us.

John Kennedy was my friend. He and I, and many others who became mutual friends, were caught up in the Viet Nam war in 1968. We trained together at Fort Holabird in Baltimore, Maryland and at Biggs Field in El Paso, Texas. John and I ended up in Nha Trang, South Viet Nam in separate intelligence units, he with the 525th MID and I with the 55th MID. His unit supported MACV and my unit supported USARV.
We were together daily in our B-8 intelligence school training unit at Fort Holabird where he and I made a $1 bet in the fall of 1968 that resulted in both of us quitting smoking on the same day. I think he smoked occasionally after that, maybe a pipe as I recall, but I never touched another cigarette thanks to John.
In Texas we studied the Vietnamese language - under a certain amount of duress I might add since our instructors were largely Vietnamese draft dodgers and females, some of whom had questionable morals. Some wonderfully unique characters were in our class, but seven of us had arrived together from Fort Holabird. We were tagged the DLI 7 (Defense Language Institute Seven). Only one other member of our intelligence class was assigned directly to Viet Nam, so we were the chosen seven - a Biblical number! All the rest missed Viet Nam completely as far as I know.
Upon graduation we were 97B40LVS MOS and we shipped out to Viet Nam. At some point after arrival I found out that John was in the same town as I was, and we got together when the situation allowed.
After we all left Viet Nam in 1971, most of the DLI 7 went to Las Vegas in November of 2005 for a Welcome Back Viet Nam Veterans celebration and we had a wonderful time. The conversations picked up where they had left off 34 years before. We actually met Ann Margaret at the local air base - being there for us was a wonderful thing for her to do.
That was the last time I saw John Kennedy, but I talked with him by phone and exchanged emails on and off. The DL 7 found out that John was very sick a little over a year ago and then John no longer communicated with us.
I did not discover that he had died until today when, once again, he did not answer his phone, and it seemed to be disconnected. A quick Google search led to the sad, but not unexpected news. I am very sad that he is gone. His dry wit and broad smile (so well captured in the photo above) will forever be a part of me, and I will miss him greatly as will many of his friends from the US Army.
Thank you for your service to our country, John Joseph Fitzpatrick Kennedy.

Very sorry to learn belatedly of John's passing. I was privileged to know him as a colleague from the time he began at Centennial College as an administrator before shifting into the more congenial role of professor in the classroom, which suited him so well. He had a very fine academic mind balanced by a kind heart. He was always dedicated to his students, thoughtful in his work, and engaged with his colleagues. I admired him. God rest him.

I am shocked to learn today about passing of John Kennedy. I am sorry that we did not know earlier and missed his service. John was an exemplary teacher at Centennial College. I had the pleasure of working with in the same office for many years. He was well liked by his students and staff alike.
May God bless his soul and his family, give them solace and fortitude and enable them to bear this loss with patience, Amen!

I was shocked to discover that John had died and am so sorry to have missed his service. John was twice voted best teacher by his degree level students and was a terrific colleague. He drew the coat of arms for my family so I could print it on our family re-union T-shirts and was a frequent participant in the annual St. Patrick's day parties we held at Centennial College and my home. May God bless his family as surely as God blessed John.
my far too late condolences

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there - I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints in snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
As you awake with morning's hush
I am the swift-up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there - I did not die.

I count myself so fortunate to have met John at the Newman Centre, almost two decades ago. He was a remarkable soul. His sense of humour was contagious and wickedly funny. But most of all John's compassion for others was unrivalled. I was inspired and awed by his boundless love and compassion for the homeless and sick. Through his actions, John lived an authentically Christian life. He will be truly missed.

My sincere condolences to John's family. He and I went back quite a bit back. We shared a common love and involvement in heraldry and we worked well together on several projects. We were also elected to the Académie internationale d'héraldique which I have informed of John's passing so that the colleagues throughout the world are aware of the loss the Academy has suffered. I was also his sponsor in the Order of Malta which he served so well, above the call of duty in fact. I will miss him very much and he is of course in my prayers. The great distance between Moncton and Toronto, as well as my age, prevent me from being present at the funeral Friday. I will be present however in heart and spirit and in prayer.
In friendship,
Robert Pichette

I knew John for many years through the Newman Centre. We often spoke of our mutual Irish ancestry and genealogy, which are passions that I shared with him. He was always a gentle, kind and humble man. I will miss him. My deepest sympathies to his close friends and family.

John was such a loving soul and a friend to all. He shared many happy times with my family and was my youngest daughter's" Karate partner " all in good Irish jest. John and I attended many retreats together and we co-facilitated a group for several years up until he was diagnosed with cancer. John had so many interests and life experiences that he could pick up a conversation with anyone, which made him an excellent teacher and psychotherapist. I witnessed "the art of JK" as he was recouping at the Toronto Rehab Centre this past summer - asking people's names and where they were from and then speaking in Vietnamese with ease to some of the care staff there. Through his sickness and death, I have come to understand what a rich life he led through his many circles of friends. I will miss him terribly but am so glad he is out of pain and in God's care. He is probably up in Heaven doing the von Pimplewasser and von Ketchup skit with Harvey Hall. Rest in peace, my friend.
