Dear Roman family. Only now have did I find out about Paul's passing. It gave me pause for quite a while and I thought of Paul as a genuine person, always. At Angela's funeral, he not only reached out and firmly grasped my hand, he wrapped his arm around me and asked how I was doing. He would very much still be on an adventure now. A short life lived, but what an awesome life to live.

David Smith posted a condolence

And so we thought we would live forever, at least we so imagined. The way of youth that inevitably leads to our common end. Our life shaped in part by the sense of immortality that visits our youthful ignorance, so we learn and grow.
I met Paul in about 1980, in Texas, where we both lived. Paul "worshipped" the freedom and openness of our "great State". He understood the importance of Liberty and individual expression and self discovery, it was in his genes, always the search for reason and purpose, never to compromise for the simple common or average. Our friendship was forged by a mutual understanding/belief in the virility of life, the importance of passion and the search for meaning outside of the norm. Few are able to convert dreams to reality. Many of us try. Paul lived his dream, a mariner.
For Paul saw in deep hues the intensity of life's purpose but not through the filters of the common or ordinary. Of this I am certain, nothing but the exceptional did Paul find worthy of pursuing. All we discussed in over 20+ years was that, the extra-ordinary. Whether it was the best fishing boat or the next place to search for treasure, the mystery of the deep oceans and the treasures they held, both natural and manmade, that seemed always his focus.
We were headed to Zihuatanejo on the day that his Father passed away in 1984(?). He called to inform me of the painful news and encouraged me to go on my own to fish for the yellow tuna. And so I did and so our friendship changed as he and his bride to be, Claudia headed back to Canada to be with his family.I saw him on a few special occasions over the next 20 years, his wedding, my 50th birthday.
Years passed since we had sailed and dreamed together but in 2012, we again found common purpose. Time had not extinguished Paul's passion and I joined him with others in a search, for what we both believed to be a legacy for all mariners and ships' passengers. Unfortunately she was not found. She remains a hidden treasure, a story waiting to be told, a story Paul lived with for years and shared with a few lucky mates.
Paul demonstrated perhaps the most important of all individual characteristics, courage. This part of his character was always present in all that I observed in him. His fellowship is missed deeply.
I offer my sincere condolences to his mother, siblings, wife and children and the many friends and mariners who will miss his unique character, passion, kindness and integrity.

I, Zachary Wilfrid Paul Boyden had the privilege of being godson to Paul and was baptized at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration. I have many fond memories of Paul; from his stories of the trouble he and my father Bruce used to get into, the boasting of his marksmanship skills to the stories of the shipwrecks he was tracking. I had the privilege of enjoying his cooking, hearing his low booming laugh and to even being the punchline to his sarcastic demeanour. When I was younger my family spent much time at the Romandale, whether it was rolling down hills, to running in fear of their dogs, to even learning how to swim at the family pool. As I grew older and started on my own path we sadly drifted apart, it wasn't until I finished at The Royal Military College of Canada that I would be reacquainted with my godfather. I remember one of the first things he asked me, "Jesus Zach how much do you bench now?" as he squeezed my bicep, I remember just laughing and shaking my head. He really did have a way of making everyone smile in a room. I will always cherish my memories of him.
I was deeply saddened by the news of his passing. Along with my wife and daughter we wish to express our deepest condolences to you Claudia, Luke and Jake as well as to all family members. Paul was loved and he will be missed but never forgotten.

John and I were terribly saddened to hear of the passing of your dear son and
brother Paul. He was so brave to fight the cancer for so long, but it was terrible
that he had it in the first place. We were not in his presence many times, but
when we were , we found him a very sensitive and caring man.Our last memories
of him were when he was dancing with Claudia on your patio with the Mexican
Band. He was having so much fun.
Our hearts and prayers are with you during this sad time.

In my previous message of condolence to the Roman family on the death of Paul, I regret very much referring to Paul as the grandson of Stephen and Betty Roman. This mistake was due to a 'senior moment' as I know, of course, that Paul was the son of Stephen and Betty Roman.
My apologies for this gaffe and I hope that it did not cause added stress to your family at this difficult time.

To the Family of Paul Roman :
I would like to extend my sincere condolences to you at this sad time when your family has lost a father, a brother and a son who, I know, was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him well either as a friend or a fellow member of the Roman family.
My father, Norman W. McConkey of Peterborough, Ontario, was central to Paul's grandfather Stephen Roman being established in the late 1940s and early 1950s in the Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle business and becoming one of the foremost figures in that industry, both nationally and internationally. Stephen purchased his first pure-bred Holstein animal from my father around 1950 and this animal, the son of Lifloc Macabar Re-Echo was a central factor in Paul's grandfather beginning his excellent Holstein-Friesian herd at his home in King, Ontario.
Paul's grandfather visited my parents' home in Peterborough on many occasions. Some of these visits would include his wife Betty, and their young daughter Helen, whom I remember as a delightful and sharp little girl of about seven or eight years. I recall, as well, Paul's sister Angela, as a very young child, coming to Peterborough.
Although I never had the pleasure of seeing or meeting Paul, as he was only two years of age when my father Norman McConkey died, my parents and our family were privileged to know Stephen and Betty Roman and their first children in the late 1940s and early 1950s. For this reason I wish to offer you my sincere condolences on the death of Stephen and Betty's son Paul.

Paul Roman's passing came as a shock to me several days ago. I knew he was sick and fighting for his life, but felt in my heart he would pull through and I was praying he would.
I met Paul twenty years ago as his instructor at Gunsite Training Ctr, Paulden, AZ. Some people you meet you know the first few minutes you are going to like, he was one of those.
It was the beginning of what I would call a great friendship. Paul never talked about his adventures and now I find out he had many. He was always wanting to talk about mine, now I'm sure I missed some great stories. I miss him already, but am sure I will see him again and I'm going to give him a fit for not sharing. Paul was a mans man, generous to a fault, nice fault however and I'm thankful for the time I was blessed with.
No man is an island unto himself, we are all part of the main. The loss of one diminishes us all, we are greatly diminished by his passing. I caution you to not ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee. God bless Paul and his family.

I was saddened to hear the news of my Friend Paul passing this week.
We had many of laughs and I always enjoyed listening to his enthusiasm of the treasure hunt . He always proudly spoke of his wife and two children.
When the cancer reared its ugly head, he told me he could beat this, he was courageous to the end. Good bye Paul, may you continue to chase the treasure in Heaven.
