Peacefully, at home at Christie Gardens, Toronto, on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the age of 93 surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her husband Sam (1972). Beloved mother of Hugh, Margaret (Doug), Mary and Chris (Bonnie). Proud Nana of Nikka, Mitchell and Cameron, Sam and Adriana. Dear sister of Janet, June (Russell), Les (the late Jean), Doreen and the late David. Aunt of many nieces and nephews. Ruth was born in another era on a farm near Kars, Ontario in 1923. She attended Ottawa Normal School in the 1940s, graduating as class co-valedictorian. After teaching for one year in a one-room country school, she moved to Woodbridge where she taught for a few years including a brief stint as acting principal. She was a teacher in East York Township for years and eventually taught at what was then the Ontario Crippled Children’s Centre, now Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab. Drawn to the bright lights of Leaside, she lived there for more than 50 years, first as a boarder, then married to Sam, and raising four children on her own after his death. Ruth was a cryptic crossword puzzle solver, dedicated Globe and Mail reader, amateur genealogist long before the internet made it easy, traveller, good listener and friend. Thanks to the wonderful staff at Christie Gardens for their kind and attentive care over the last five years. A service will be held for family and friends in the Spring. If desired, donations to The Salvation Army, 2 Overlea Boulevard, East York, Ontario M4H 1P4, would be appreciated.
