Obituary of Frederick Glen (Ted) McDowell

Frederick Glen (Ted) McDowell August 12, 1929 – November 18, 2016 It is with profound sadness that we announce that our beloved Ted passed away on November 18th in North York General Hospital. Ted, as the youngest of a tight-knit prairie family of eleven, is survived by his loving sister Ruth (Neil Crosby), Elda his cherished wife of 63 years, and children Laurel (John Carley) and Russ (Liv), grandchildren River Carley, Stefan (Camilla), Christopher and great-grandchildren Jenny and Oscar. Ted gave his all for his family, both near and extended. He will be sorely missed by us all. Ted began on a Depression era Saskatchewan farm and followed his ambitions to become a banker with the Bank of Toronto in Assiniboia. After a long and venerable career, both in Toronto and in his beloved Western Canada, he rose to be Vice Chairman of the TD Bank. Throughout his career, he never lost sight of his roots and his values and loved banking for the people he met, and the friends he made along the way. After retiring from active service in 1990, Ted continued as a director of the bank and as a valued director in a myriad of corporations too numerous to name. As he slowly wound down his engagements within the world of business, he turned his energies toward volunteer organizations and served on several of their boards, most notably the Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation. His contributions form a legacy that will continue for years to come. In his later years, Ted remained active in his community and his church and found pleasure and companionship in his local Kiwanis club. He enjoyed travelling with Elda to many parts of the world, including Ireland to experience his heritage and Norway to keep close touch with his family there. Ted was fortunate enough to enjoy good health until very recently. He maintained a keen interest in the world around him through avid reading and contact with his many friends and former colleagues. Ted will be remembered, with honor, by all those lucky enough to have known him. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the Cardiac and Neuro/Stroke units of North York General Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29th. A service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, November 30th at 1:00 p.m. Should one wish to give a donation in Ted’s memory, please consider Wellspring, 4 Charles Street East, Suite 400, Toronto, Ontario M4Y1T1 (www.wellspring.ca).
