Obituary of Dorothy Jane Livey

DOROTHY JANE LIVEY

December 2, 1925 - November 16, 2016

Our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother died peacefully in the early morning of Wednesday, November 16, 2016, days before celebrating her 91st birthday.

Dorothy was predeceased by her first husband Albert Mathieson Livey on November 17, 1971 and her second husband Lorenz ‘Lorie’ Blaser on March 8, 2008. She is survived by her children John (Cheryl), Gordon (Jovita) and Janet; her grandchildren Alison (Gareth), Andrew (Nicole) and Christopher; and great grandchildren Griffin, Galen and Ava. She will be remembered by Lorie’s family, Lynn (deceased), John, Paula, John, David, and their children Brian, Stephen, Jordan, Kyle, and Logan.

Dorothy Jane Hamilton was born on December 2, 1925 in Toronto to Charles "Charlie" Hamilton and Jane Hewitt. She was the second youngest of seven siblings: Stanley, Arnold, Roy, Evelyn, Phyllis and John. At the time of her passing, she was the last surviving sibling and will be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews and their families living across Canada. Dorothy grew up in North Toronto. She was a graduate of North Toronto High School in 1944 and of the Toronto School of Nursing in 1948.

Dorothy married Albert Livey in 1949 in Toronto where they raised their family of three children, living first on Arlington Avenue and then in 1960 moving to Leaside. In 1954, Al and Dorothy built a cottage on Orr Lake and spent many memorable summers with the family and friends there. Albert died prematurely in 1971. Dorothy resumed her nursing careering, joining Coro Jewelry as the workplace nurse, later becoming head of Human Resources.

Dorothy was active in Northlea United Church and was especially dedicated to the church choir. It was at Northlea where Dorothy met Lorenz Blaser. In the spring of 2000, she in her 70’s and he in his 80’s, they were married and enjoyed eight wonderful years of loving companionship, until Lorie’s passing in March 2008. She cherished her friends at 44 The Donway West and the many evenings of banter, bridge and “G + T’s”.

Dorothy gathered friends wherever she went. She was an accomplished weaver, talented pianist, loved water colour painting and floral arranging. She was a long-time member of Milne House Horticultural Society. She grew fruit in her Leaside backyard and loved to share her jams and jellies. Fiercely independent and tremendously determined Dorothy overcame several challenges in her life – the loss of loved ones, breast cancer in the early 1990’s, and more recently bone cancer. Still, she lived her life with a deep sense of gratitude and with a shining positive outlook.

She found friendship, fellowship and care at Revera Donway Place. We thank the staff and acknowledge the caring assistance of Lynne, Rosemarie and Lori. Warm gratitude is also extended to the Temmy Latner Palliative Care Team and the staff at Sunnybrook K-Wing Palliative Care Unit, where Dorothy was provided with excellent care and comfort.

The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 19th. A funeral service will be held in NORTHLEA UNITED CHURCH, 125 Brentcliffe Road, on Monday, November 21st at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow service. Private family interment at Prospect Cemetery, 1450 St. Clair Avenue West. In lieu of flowers, donations to Sunnybrook Palliative Care Unit, Canadian Cancer Society or Northlea United Church are appreciated.
