Obituary of Asta (Magiste) Kaljuste

KALJUSTE, Asta (Magiste)

Died peacefully with family at her side on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. She was 89. Born in Tartu, Estonia, she fled the Russian occupation as a teenager and lived in displaced people's camps in Germany where she met and married Ferdinand Kaljuste and gave birth to their first daughter, Malle. They then emigrated to Montreal where they had two more daughters, Truuta and Kadi. Asta, Ferdi and Kadi moved to Toronto in the 1970s while Malle and Truuta remained in Montreal. Asta was a retiree of TD Bank and was pre-deceased by Ferdi in 1996. She said her two favourite things to do were to talk and eat. She loved to cook, knit, watch Jeopardy and CNN, and play Scrabble. Pink was her favourite colour and she had an amazing collection of lady bug stuff. She is sorely missed by her daughters Malle, Truuta and Kadi (Brad Ciccarelli) and grandson Dylan F. Kaljuste Ciccarelli as well as nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, the U.S., Australia, Sweden and Estonia, and dear friends Connie and Ruth. Special thanks to the caregivers at Ina Grafton Gage Home.

The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 13th. A funeral service will be held in ST. PETER’S ESTONIAN LUTHERAN CHURCH, 817 Mount Pleasant Road, on Monday, November 14th at 11:00 a.m. Please wear something pink.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. But if you must send flowers, do make them pink.
