Obituary of Paavo "Paul" Laaneorg

Paul (Paavo) Laaneorg passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital (Palliative) on Sunday October 30, 2016 following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by loving wife Jacqueline (Preston). Dear father of Andrea Inez (Fred). Brother of late Melita (late Elmar), Magda, Vivi (late Harold), Karl (late Eileen), late Archie (Nancy) and Raivo (late Anne and late Asa). Brother in law to Shirley (late Robert), Richard and Carol, late Sheila, and late John. Uncle to Val, Ann, Robert, Ingrid, Susan, John, Wendy and David, as well as Cheryl, Norma, late Sandy, Rick, Steven, late Jon, Patrick, Susan, and Jackie.

The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME, A.W. MILES NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Sunday November 6, 2016 from 2pm to 4pm, and 7pm to 9pm, with service in the chapel on Monday November 7, 2016 at 1pm, followed by a Reception and Celebration of Life.

We recently celebrated his 80th birthday at his favourite steak house with fine wine and good company, while he regaled us with boating stories.

Paul lived life to the fullest, never one to be slowed by the inconveniences of the disease. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, boating, and in later years driving by the lake with binoculars to view the birds. He smoked his own meat and fish, enjoyed cooking everything, and loved to discuss recipes. There was nothing he could not learn and nothing he could not fix. With sports, he was an avid follower of baseball, hockey, the Olympics, and everything in between. He would often sit at the Leaside field with our dog Princess, enjoying a live baseball game.

Always smiling and good natured, Paul got along with everyone he met, especially the animals. His favourite visitor at Sunnybrook Palliative was the St John Ambulance Therapy Dog, Trinket, who climbed all over him each Friday while licking his face.

We wish to thank the incredible team at the Odette Centre who ensured his independence and quality of life for as long as they did, and assisted with his transition into the care of the very compassionate team in the K1C Palliative Care Unit. This followed many years of Sunnybrook and Princess Margaret Hospital miracles. We are ever grateful.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be directed in memory of Paul (Paavo) Laaneorg to “The Odette Cancer Centre” or "The Palliative Care Unit" in care of The Sunnybrook Foundation, or the Princess Margaret Foundation.
