Obituary of Thomas Bernard Akin

THOMAS B. AKIN Died suddenly Wednesday, September 28, 2016. Tom was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to a growing family that he loved and cherished deeply. His energy and determination were widely admired, and will be missed by all he touched. He was an avid boater, squash player, and golfer who also prided himself on having flown nearly 3 million miles, maintaining Super Elite status each year. Tom was fiercely proud of both his and his family’s accomplishments. He had a generous spirit, not only towards his family and friends, but also in relation to the many charities he gave to. He was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, earning a B.Sc., MBA, and LL.B from Dalhousie University before pursuing a career as a tax lawyer at McCarthy Tétrault in Toronto in 1977. Over the next four decades, he became one of the most respected tax practitioners of his generation, specializing in transfer pricing, litigation, and tax dispute resolution. He was named one of Canada’s top tax advisors by the International Tax Review and was recently described by a respected American peer as a “great lawyer, well-informed, insightful, strong-willed, but always pleasant—a true Canadian!” Tom will be genuinely missed by his friends, colleagues, and family. He leaves behind his loving wife Mary, children Holly (Dano), Thomas (Sophie), and Matthew (Lucy), grandchildren James, Ella, and Calla, his mother Mary Akin, sisters Sharon, Barbara, and Jeanne along with his many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Frederick Akin. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5th. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) or Mount Sinai Hospital.
